Obviously we will get insurance but do we need a "Pet Plan" (covers vaccinations, flee treatments etc) or is it better to pay as you go? My mind is boggled. Thank you, also, any recommendations for insurance companies and packages? Currently looking at petplan.

Thanks so much

Make sure you get lifetime insurance otherwise you claim once I’m that issue will no longer be covered. That is one of the main reasons why different policies have different prices!

Marblerunfun · 24/05/2021 08:03

Thank you, I did see that as an option. Is there anything else we need to look out for? We aren't in a hurry as they can't come home for another month, plus they come with 4 weeks Insurance.

Would anyone be willing to share which company they use and have had positive experiences with?

I think some vets4pets do a "vacc for life" plan - you pay for the first ones, then you pay a one off £99 for annual vaccinations for each pet, pays for itself in a couple of years.

Thank you @HurryUpBetelgeuse

I've got lifetime £7,000 a year Petplan policy for Haribo. He's only a moggie but after his predecessor Troy developed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and in 5 months from diagnosis and treatment to death it was nearly up to the £4,000 mark. So I went higher for Haribo.

He's with Vets4Pets and signed up for the £99 vaccinations for life.

Thank you @TroysMammy Great names btw!

We won't have them home until July. They are from Cats Protection. I'd 100% recommend using if anyone is thinking of getting a cat/kitten.

We have Petplan Lifetime insurance and although they are definitely not the cheapest they have been great when we had to make a claim.

We also pay for a monthly vet plan which covers their flea and worm treatment and vaccinations. We pay £14.50 per cat. I prefer spreading the cost like this and it did make me realise I wasn't de-fleaing the cats as regularly as I thought as I ended up with a little stock of flea treatment! Now I make sure they are done every 4-6 weeks.

MilduraS · 25/05/2021 07:44

I have lifetime insurance from helpucover for our two cats. One broke her leg within 6 months and had a titanium plate fitted for £3.5k. The other cat was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and has had about 5k for treatment (blood clot on spine) and investigations this year. She's also on three types of medication now. They've always paid out without any questions.

We also have a monthly plan with our vets for flea, worming, 6 monthly check ups and vaccinations. It costs £13.50 a month and has been well worth it. I like that we have a fixed monthly amount which helps with budgeting.

IliveonCoffee · 25/05/2021 07:49

We have pet plan for insurance. We're about to get a new cat so we'll hopefully get a multi-cat discount. I think its one of very few if not the only one the vets trust to pay - so will allow you to claim, and the insurance pay, instead of having to pay out of pocket and claim back.

As ours are rescues, they came fully vaccinated, neutered and flea/wormed. But vets4pets offers a plan for £10 per month with flea/worming stuff, the yearly booster and a health check. We get advocate on it, and drontil - we discovered this plan when frontline stopped working and we had an actual fleabag Blush

Champagneforeveryone · 25/05/2021 08:41

I believe iliveoncoffee is correct about PetPlan being "trusted" by vets, although I think that will be dependant on your own vet.

We keep a credit card which has a £4.5k limit specifically for vet bills as they usually need to be paid up front these days.

We have a a couple of policies with Bought By Many and recently had to make a claim after DDog2 fractured her toe. I was extremely impressed by the speed with which the claim was paid, and the way I was kept updated throughout the process. This has been my only experience with them, but I would happily recommend them based on it Smile

We were also recently burned when our old boy was unwell and subsequently PTS at 13. We routinely stop insuring them as they get to 10 or 11 and had never been caught out. Due to insurance I was a bit behind the times with that cost of actually paying for veterinary treatment, and we were heading for £1.5k frighteningly fast, so in future we will either continue to pay insurance, or put a monthly amount away instead as they age.

Rhannion · 25/05/2021 09:11

Oh they are beautiful thank you.

shewalkslikerihanna · 25/05/2021 10:23

Gosh I had 5 persians over a lifespan of 28 years and they cost us next to nothing healthwise.
It’s frightening the amount some people are paying out

GUFFAWGAFF · 25/05/2021 10:35

I really appreciate you all taking the time to reply with such useful information and sharing your own good/bad/sad experiences. I think we will go with PetPlan for insurance then vets4pets for the £10 per month (per cat) cover.

GUFFAWGAFF · 25/05/2021 10:36

Name change fail! But I'm the OP Grin

Beamur · 25/05/2021 10:41

Our cats are insured with Petplan. Have had to use them once and it was very easy.
I have a health plan with 2 of my pets but the others go to a different vet which doesn't offer a plan. Pros and cons either way.
