I’d like to get some cheap backup sunglasses online
This is the prescription card that came with my lens, but the online form wants an axis value? (Photo attached)
Can anyone help me understand please?

They won’t be for driving or long periods btw, just for beach play with the kids/ park etc. It doesn’t have to be perfect

I wonder if mine is missing as it’s only the lens card, maybe I need to ring the optician.
I’d go to them but it’s such a faff

Axis is only if you have astigmatism isn’t it? I didn’t used to have one (do now).

Yours is blank on your card; have you tried leaving blank on the online form?

Here my old prescription... no axis measurement in one eye

^Here’s

Abouttimemum · 23/05/2021 20:46

If you have CYL then you should have an axis, these numbers measure the astigmatism in your eye. Is the prescription card from your optician? If not I’d suggest you get your eyes tested by an optician to ensure the correct prescription.

DH works in optics and this is what he says anyway, and from my vague memory of part time work for an optical manufacturer many years ago!

D0D0 · 23/05/2021 20:47

Aha... that makes sense @Abouttimemum. My script has no cylinder either.

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 23/05/2021 20:47

It’s from the optician, I photographed it in the shop

I am shortsighted with astigmatism (mild enough to wing it without on contacts)

The cyl part of the prescription is meaningless without the axis that it lies at. You won't be able to order anything online without the axis because the prescription as its written there is incomplete.

Spamfrit · 23/05/2021 21:01

Just go to your optician and ask for a copy of your actual prescription. They won’t mind and then you’ll actually have a proper pair of glasses to wear! What’s the point of an optician taking the time to accurately measure your sight and then you guessing at what to put into the online computer!

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 23/05/2021 22:19

@Spamfrit I’m not guessing. I’m asking what to do and what it means, fortunately I’ve already had helpful advice.

@BlueCarPinkShoes makes sense, I presume it’s the rotation or something so the lens manufacturer doesn’t state it?

@TheViewFromTheCheapSeats Yeah, that's basically it. That part of the lens power is only in one direction and the axis tells you where. Usually if you've got a manufacturers card like that the whole prescription is on it. I've never seen one with a cyl but no axis.

D'you not have a proper copy of the prescription from the test you could use? If you don't the opticians should be able to give you one. They might email it if you ask. What were you planning to do about the PD measurement?

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 23/05/2021 22:48

My optician does PD by using a wipe clean marker on the lenses, was planning the same...?
