eBay - is this a scam?

I've sold some of my DD's old clothes on eBay. The buyer has messaged to say her iPad has been hacked and her ID has been stolen so can I send her my name and address and she'll send me the cash. This sounds dodgy to me, has anyone experienced similar? I might be lacking imagination as I can't work out exactly what the scam is?

Sounds very odd.If her ID HAS been stolen how do you know she's the genuine buyer and not the scammer. I think I'd cancel the sale to be honest.

I hadn't thought of that but very good point. She's got great feedback as a buyer but I'm just not comfortable with it. Who on earth would want to post cash even if it is only £11? I'll cancel the sale and relist.

Sounds bollocks.
She can log on to
PayPal and on another device change her password to pay you

Sellers can only leave positive feedback for buyers so great feedback doesn't necessarily mean much.

I can't work out what the scam would be either but personally I'd steer clear. Ebay doesn't like buyers and sellers exchanging personal information and masking contact outside of Ebay anyway, because you could sell her the clothes for cash and then tell Ebay the buyer cancelled so you don't have to pay fees. You could use that as your excuse to back out, that you don't want to get into trouble with Ebay.

She's got great feedback as a buyer

Is it really her, though, or a scammer exploiting her trustworthiness by pretending to be her?

I'm still not sure what the exact scam would be, though. It might just be the very beginning of some sort of scam chain, maybe - the 'get you onside' part?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2021 23:52

Might she be wanting to 'accidentally' send you far too much and ask you to refund her the difference - or send a whole load extra for you to pass on (electronically) to her courier in advance - and then she sends you counterfeit notes or something?

Anything out of the ordinary like this, I’d say just back right off. Don’t get drawn in!

Viviennemary · 23/05/2021 23:55

No. Cancel the sale.

Loogaborooga · 24/05/2021 07:41

I've cancelled now, forgotten that you can only leave positive feedback so won't get suckered in by that another time. I only sell the odd few clothes on there and this is the first time anything dodgy has happened so wasn't quite sure how to react. Thanks all

I would have gone down the non paying bidder route so any negative feedback buyer left would be removable.
