I've found the holy grail of can openers!

After years of using standard ones that are difficult to turn, don't cut properly and are basically rubbish, I happened to borrow one at work that seemed incredibly easy to use. I ordered the same one for home a few months ago and it still works like a dream, cuts the can like butter it's so easy, but looks like any other manual can opener. It's made by Brabantia ('tasty+ can and bottle opener'), I ordered it from their website and it cost £9.95 plus tax and delivery. Highly recommend, and I don't work for Brabantia and wouldn't buy one of their over-priced bins! I imagine it would be especially good for people with reduced strength in their hands.

Have added this to my wish list for when mine goes kaput! Thanks, OP.

I discovered recently that my 20 year old DD did not know how to use a tin opener.

I am a perfectly competent person in many areas of life but I really struggle with tin openers!

I’m left handed so can openers are usually designed against me.

Many years ago DP bought an electric can opener and we’ve never looked back.
We have a Joseph and Joseph one now and it’s fab.

Wow.
MissyB1 · 28/05/2021 08:04

I will order one thanks. I also bought a very handy gadget for opening jars / bottles for people like me with very weak wrists. It works perfectly. I will try and find the website to link it.

@Chemenger

I discovered recently that my 20 year old DD did not know how to use a tin opener.
It’s a combination of ring pull cans, hardly any tins we use need a tin opener, and a natural inclination to get other people to do things for her Smile. She had to learn when we were living in the US because most tins need a tin opener there, the ring pull is much rarer. Recently in this context means within the last year or two. We have a Brabantia opener and it is good. Growing up we had a wall mounted opener, it was very easy to use. The worst were those blade ones the you had to sort of saw the can open with, I never got the hang of those.

I honestly can't remember the last time I used a cab opener! It's all ring pull or packaged in cardboard now.

Bearnecessity · 28/05/2021 08:28

Noted....there are some crap can openers out there....good news...

Kapalika · 28/05/2021 09:28

Got a Brabantia too. It does the job!

Hollywhiskey · 28/05/2021 09:31

My sister got me a Latana one for Christmas. If that sounds weird, it's amazing. It actually cuts the lid off the tin with no sharp edges at all and makes it into a lid you can use again if you need to put it in the fridge or something. My recycling box is no longer a danger to pets and toddlers (or me). Also it's really easy to use and no sharp edges on the thing itself.

IloveJudgeJudy · 28/05/2021 15:20

This Kuhn Rikon one is my favourite. It leaves the cut can edge blunt.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/05/2021 17:59

I have a brabantia too Highly recommend

SkepticalCat · 28/05/2021 18:08

Yup, Brabantia tin opener is excellent. Had ours a few years now, ever since the standard cheapo ones kept breaking after a few months.

PollyPicket · 28/05/2021 18:17

Amazon review aren't all enamoured with it.
