What are the TikTok dances all about?

Please could someone explain these TikTok dances to me as they keep popping up on my Instagram feed and now I’m curious.

Is it some sort of challenge and they’re copying the moves from somewhere? Or do they ‘choreograph’ (note ironic use of the word!) the dances themselves? Like what is the point of it??

I get that it’s likely just a bit of fun with no point to it whatsoever and my kids love watching them anyway. But personally if I’m going to watch dancing I’d rather watch actual trained dancers but each to their own 🤣

Someone makes up a dance (or an action to a sound or song) and it becomes a trend that people copy.

I made up dances when I was a kid in the 90s so I guess it’s the modern version of that.

In my opinion the dances are probably the least weird thing about TIktok. It’s the video where people film themselves crying I find unusual.

They are weird, mostly danced in a half arsed manner, and just, well, odd. All very similar, robotic type movements. Saw a kid aged about 13 walking down the street doing the twitchy tik tok thing as she walked, I just don't get the appeal.

I keep seeing people dancing to Rasputin but that's on Instagram reels . Grin

Glad it’s not just me who thinks they’re odd - they’re just sort of weird, jerky movements with no musicality to them. I suppose it might be fun to see if you can copy and remember one of the routines (if you were really, really bored - like quarantining in a hotel room for 2 weeks sort of bored!) but why anyone else wants to watch them is a mystery to me!

Not as weird as the crying videos though - haven’t seen any of them yet thankfully 😅

@IrishGirl2020 you can have been on there long enough them. People film themselves crying while a song pays and words come up on screen to describe why they’re sad (domestic abuse/husband left them for another woman/parent died etc etc). I’m not sure if it’s an age thing but I just find it incredible odd that someone has actually set up their phone facing them, then pressed record and then cried at the camera. I wonder if it’s just the modern version of posting a Facebook status to get comments of support.

I hardly see any of the dances on my TikTok. There are some really interesting people that I follow and the algorithms have completely ousted the kids stuff from my feed. It's funny that when I look at it on dd1's phone, it's full of kids and daftness!

Worriesome · 25/05/2021 10:28

I hate TikTok, complete and utter waste of time!!!

Rockbird · 25/05/2021 11:38

Yay! Good for you! 👏🏻

IrishGirl2020 · 25/05/2021 13:49

I don’t even have TikTok but some of the videos seem to migrate over to Instragram hence why I keep seeing those weird dances on my Insta search page - along with other things they think I might like - also includes lots of pregnancy related stuff - which given I had my last child a decade ago and am not planning any more - is quite weird. It’s clearly got my preferences and interests completely wrong 🤣

I'm not on TT or FB but do have Pinterest full of sparkly lovely projects I'll never fecking get round to doing and my feed is flooded with Tik Tok rubbish. I mean how many different ways are there to make "clean, quick, 3 ingredient taste bloody awful " cookies? Confused

I'm aware I'm an old gimmer though so in no shape or form it's target demographic.

Does anyone else use your phone?

It doesn't document interests as such; it generates the Explore feed based on what you engage with - whether that's watching, commenting, visiting accounts. So if you're watching the TikTok dances, you'll see more of them - and if you're looking at the baby photos, you'll see more of those, too.

if you're ignoring both and using Instagram to look at things you do like - home decor or business advice or beauty or weddings or whatever - you'll see more of that stuff, unless someone else is using your phone too. If you've got kids watching TikTok dances on your Insta, you'll be stuck with them for a while!

IrishGirl2020 · 25/05/2021 14:35

@AnxiousWreckAgain

Well my kids do use my phone - but they’re boys between 10 and 15 years - so not sure about the pregnancy stuff 😂 - but they do love those dances 🙄
I do have one friend on Instagram who had a baby this year and I do look at and comment on her photos - so maybe that’s it 🤷‍♀️

The Tik Tok algorithm is suuuper clever. It literally has me down to a T. There are lots of amazing content creators on there, not just children doing dance routines :)

Totallyrandomname · 25/05/2021 14:52

I have weird things on my tiktok. Is that because I watch the weird things and then it thinks I like the weirds things and so it shows me more weird things??
Seriously though I get a lot of child abuse survivor content and I did wonder if it’s because the line of work I’m in means I read reports/reviews etc linked to that?

Anyhow one thing I do like about tiktok is that it really is a mini window into the younger generation and things like the words they use etc. For example I just found out that young people interpret ... to mean awkward silence and that 😂 is something young people don’t really use anymore.

Totallyrandomname · 25/05/2021 14:53

Also I loved a Trent recently where people were getting their babies/toddlers to watch a guy slowly making his face into a big smile. It was lush to see that babies instantly react by having a big smile on their own faces. Was a lovely positive video trend.
