Do we need a double buggy if we have a newborn and a 2yr old

Currently pregnant with #2 due in November. By then our son will be 2.
Just looking at prams that can hold a carry cot and a toddler and they are coming in at over £1k.

What do other people do? We currently just have one pram that was able to hold rlthe carry cot then turned into a stroller but obviously don't want to push two strollers when #2 is a bit older.

Depends in your child. Do they still nap when out and about? If yes definitely get a double
This is the crucial question. I had a 22 month gap. When DC2 was born we were out and about on foot all day everyday and used the double loads. Couldn't have managed decent naps for both of them without it.

I had a 2nd hand Mountain Buggy Duet with carrycot that slides onto the flattened seat. Carrycot was a godsend too for carrying baby up and down stairs to the flat we were in and having a hand free for toddler.

MB Duet went on all sizes of buses and through single doorways

I had a double, with 3 years between, but I didn't drive so sometimes we were walking a long way at nap time.

I didn't use it much, most of the time I used either dd2 in the sling and dd1 in the buggy or a buggy board. However when we did use it, then it was fairly invaluable. And I paid £40 for a nice McLaren double from an NCT sale, so didn't pay too much.

I have a very funny memory from when dd2 was about 3yo and dd1 about 6yo. We'd met up with a friend who had 2 children slightly older for a fireworks display. We'd bought the buggy as much for somewhere for them to sit to eat as we knew the ground would be very muddy.
Afterwards there was dh puffing as he pushed two 6yos up the very steep hill home while the two 3yos walked in front with their noses in their air proclaiming that they were far too old to sit in a buggy.
The 6yos didn't care. As they pointed out-they hadn't had to walk up the hill. Grin

Yes. I kept the double until school age in the end. But I walk a lot and walk quite fast when I'm doing errands.

Get the out n about double nipper. We bought for 350 and sold for 200. Great buggy and is suitable from newborn.

My 2nd and 3rd have 17m between them, I did use a sling sometimes but I absolutely loved my double babyjogger city mini and used it for ages.

Dd2 walked from 10m, but just because she was a good walker, didn't mean she would go where I wanted her to, and she would not have stayed on any sort of buggy board.

Expecting DC5 (in 3wks!) With a 22m gap and already have my BJCM double. No question. Again DS (dc4) can walk well, but I have 3 dogs to walk, school runs to do etc and sometimes it's just easier. He is also 😭😭😭 only napping every 3rd day at the moment so strapping them in the buggy might extend that a bit and be good for me!

With 2&3 they used to both nap in there after lunch and I would just sit without anyone touching me 😂 which is why I've never been sold on slings instead.

I used ours allll the time with a two-year age gap. I bought a second hand Bugaboo Donkey for £500 and sold it a year later for £600!

I had a 3 year old and a newborn, we do walk everywhere though I got a second hand Phil and Ted's for £50 we used it for about 6 months maybe a bit longer then sold it for the same as I bought it for.

Doubles are so big and heavy and clumsy. I used a buggy board/ sling combo. Initially baby in sling and 2 yo in pushchair then when baby big enough for reclined seat (mine didn’t lie flat unless I converted it to pram mode) we had baby in pushchair and 2 year old on buggy board except for 2 year old’s naps if he needed one out and about

No way could i have managed without a double buggy but we walk a lot. Same age gap as you. We had a City double and loved it. I also loved the In and Outs

Oly4 · 23/05/2021 18:42

Sorry that’s a Babyjogger city double.. loved it

Milesbennettdyson · 23/05/2021 22:49

I had almost dead on a 2 year gap and my 2 year old still napped for a couple of hours in the middle of the day so I had the Bugaboo Donkey then swapped to the Baby Jogger Mini CT double.

We have a 20 month age gap and bought the baby jogger city mini double - it's great. Really lightweight, folds down really small considering it's a double. They hold their value really well and can pick them up second hand around here for about £100.

We got the carrycot which is great to have both side by side.

Our toddler can be a bit lazy so it's good to have the option for him, especially when I'm out on my own with them and can't carry him and push a baby too!
