Off to Filey in August and I'd love some local insight

Hopeful of getting a four day break this August. Two adults and two littles 8 and 5. I'd love some locals tips on where to eat, where is good for kids, some local park recommendations as I can only really afford to pay for one (maybe two) big attractions.

So excited to be visiting Yorkshire!

😊

Will you have transport?

Ligglepiggle · 22/05/2021 10:39

Trains to Scarborough or Bridlington for rides and a bit more going on.
The Italian at the bottom of the Main Street is child friendly. There’s an outdoor paddling pool by the beach and an arcade at the other end by the lifeboats.
There’s a pub where we were going to eat on the Main Street but it was absolutely filthy inside and they had an aviary and the oldest 20p rides I have ever seen! Grin I can’t remember what it’s called unfortunately.

There’s a free nice kids play area on Filey country park which has great views
The beaches are just gorgeous here, you can walk along the beach to hunmanby gap to the cafe there, and you can often see pods of porpoise from there (there’s a Facebook group called Scarborough porpoise which tells people where they are!)

The holiday camp at reighton has a little land train thing that's free, down to the beach and back - that beach is good for fossil hunting rather than sandcastles

sergeilavrov · 22/05/2021 10:45

There is a guest house owned by a lovely woman there called Hadeel, and she gave the best guidance for the area and a lot of tips to save some money when my friends visited. I believe they ended up heading to Scarborough Castle, and they found the trains very manageable with their children (not from the UK). Might be worth messaging her for some advice, or even if you’re looking for a reasonable place to stay.

If you have a car and want something different there’s England’s largest community woodland at Raincliffe and Forge valley, they do free nature walks on Thursday mornings and Scarborough open air theatre does free family shows a couple of times a week during summer holidays

Sistedtwister · 22/05/2021 10:47

Tommys is really nice but book the week before you go. American style diner. The Italian is lovely. Crazy golf and small arcade on the front.
The steam train to Whitby and back from Pickering across the moors is lovely if you have transport. You get a couple of hours in Whitby

If you like walking you can walk the brigg and there are a few nice nature reserves in the area. We love Danes Dyke

Nancylovesthecock · 22/05/2021 11:01

Yes, sorry will have transport 😊 thanks for all the tips so far x

What's parking like? We are staying at Blue dolphin and I'm told its not walking distance to the beach?

Parking in Filey can be a struggle if you want to be tight in centre, if you don’t mind parking at Filey brigg or near the golf course it’s fine.

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/05/2021 11:35

@Sistedtwister I'm also visiting the area this summer and had a look at Tommys, it looks good so hopefully we will be able to give it a try. We used to like Burgsy's in Whitby but unfortunately it isn't there now.

Cheermonger · 22/05/2021 11:36

Blue Dolphin is actually on Gristhorpe bay and the park edges the Cleveland way. You can scramble down into the beach which is fun if your kids are the adventurous types, there are paths down but not if you’re carrying 4 deckchairs and a lilo etc 🤣

Cheermonger · 22/05/2021 11:37

San Marco is the nice pizza place. There’s a pub called bull inn in gristhorpe village which is ok for food and has a huge garden kidscan mess about in

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 22/05/2021 12:06

We love Filey!
Blue dolphin is a bit of a walk to the beach- there is a cliff walk but it is steep.
Get some fishing nets and go rock pooling on the brigg- my kids can spend hours looking for crabs there.

You can be in Scarborough in ten minutes- peasholme park is lovely- the dragon boats are great fun. There's also alpamere the swimming centre- fun for a morning.

Sewerby hall is a good day out.

Have a great holiday!

TheQueef · 22/05/2021 12:10

Nothing helpful.
We stayed at the Blue Dolphin in 79, still talk about it today it was brill Grin but buy a wind break and have waterproof coats.
It'll be a blast!

Nancylovesthecock · 24/05/2021 19:12

So, I've booked Tommy's for our second night 😁 looks fantastic.

We love rock pooling so that's good to know.

Gonna look up some of the other tips now

We stayed at Blue Dolphin last September and going to Primrose Valley next month. Can't wait. Enjoy!

DeltaFlyer · 24/05/2021 19:17

Farnborough head near Bridlington had a lovely little cove beach with old smugglers tunnels to explore (do be careful of the tide however). Some old pill boxes from ww2 also.

Losttheequipment · 24/05/2021 19:20

DeltaFlyer means Flamborough Head. I don’t think Sewerby Hall is worth the entrance fee personally

BashfulClam · 24/05/2021 19:23

@Ginger1982 Primrose Valley! What a blast from the past , spent some happy holidays there as a youngster…

NeverSurrender · 24/05/2021 19:29

Our holiday at Blue Dolphin was one of my favourite holidays Uk or abroad! Had a fab time, and plenty to do with the dc. The old steam train across the Moors was brilliant , lots of stops and finished up at Whitby.

DeltaFlyer · 24/05/2021 19:30
