What can I take round for lunch? Help!

Morning!

My colleague and I will be having a very long Saturday moderating GCSE grades today. I said I'd pick up some bits for lunch but she's pregnant with low iron levels so can't have too much dairy, and previous diabetes so watching her sugar. What can I take that will still feel like a nice lunch? Drawing a blank!

Vegetarian? And then fresh berries and unsweetened digestives for afters

WeAreTheHeroes · 22/05/2021 09:15

Keep it simple with salad and roast chicken breasts - you could take a Caesar salad kit.

MaMaD1990 · 22/05/2021 09:16

A nice salad with some salmon, veggies and hummus with some pittas and roasted tomatoes/peppers, quiche. Just some things I can think of that you can pick up from the store!

CrazyCatsAndKittens · 22/05/2021 09:17

Text her and ask what she fancies for lunch?

Palavah · 22/05/2021 09:22

Deli Meze stuff you can pick up from sainsburys etc - chargrilled artichokes/aubergines, olives, sundried tomatoes, lovely bread, hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, salad leaves and mini tomatoes. I'd also get some cheese for me...

And some berries and coconut yoghurt.

Why does being pregnant with low iron levels mean avoiding dairy?

IHeartKingThistle · 22/05/2021 09:23

Apparently dairy hinders iron absorption?

Steak, spinach and a pint of Guinness Grin

RampantIvy · 22/05/2021 09:26

Anything with vitamin C in it helps iron absorption, so you could also take some fresh orange juice as a drink.

Also avoid drinking tea within an hour after eating as that hinders iron absorption.

bbbbcc · 22/05/2021 09:26

I was told that when I was anaemic and pregnant @IHeartKingThistle. Chicken salad, some crisps and dips? Panini's?

IHeartKingThistle · 22/05/2021 09:28

Ok now I want to eat alllll of that!

Yeah it does, when I had low iron in pregnancy I was told to avoid dairy at meal times and when I had my supplement. Orange juice helps with iron absorption though.

I agree with a salad with chicken. You could get those mini bites of cakes for after, that way she could just have a couple and it’s not much sugar.

ScissorsBike · 22/05/2021 09:31

I'd be starving if you just brought a bloody salad! Bring some bread!

Palavah · 22/05/2021 09:34

I had no idea, explains a lot, thanks!

Rainbowqueeen · 22/05/2021 09:34

Soup and bread

LettyLoman · 22/05/2021 09:37

If you're near a Morrisons they do amazing Indian picnic stuff, mini samosa, peckoras, mini tikka chicken. They are not too spicy. they also on the same counter have cheese crackers and quiche. One stop area.

Definately · 22/05/2021 09:37

A nice big wrap.

LettyLoman · 22/05/2021 09:38

sorry realised you can't give dairy..

user1471538283 · 22/05/2021 09:40

Fresh cooked rotisserie chicken, salad, french bread, fruit and some bits sized brownies with orange juice. Or those lovely M&S sandwiches!

UpTheJunktion · 22/05/2021 09:45

The Waitrose Levantine range
M&S tapas dishes
Or similar.

Dolmades
Felafel
Houmous
Great bread

Pork pie
Pickle
Salad

Slightly off topic but this isn't quite right.

It's at the time of taking the iron that calcium-rich foods eg milk should be avoided.

Not that you should follow a low-dairy diet overall. That's likely to be much more problematic for a pregnant woman.

Re lunch, ask her. 'Anything you particularly fancy for lunch?' Done.

AngusThermopyle · 22/05/2021 09:59

I would ask her, both my Dd's are pregnant atm and both are having weird food cravings and pet hates.

IHeartKingThistle · 22/05/2021 10:01

I did ask her - she said anything apart from the stuff she isn't alllowed!

Well you got great ideas up thread.

Re the dairy, maybe let her know it's not a thing re iron absorption (only at the time of taking it).
