Double pram for newborn and 4 year old?

Can anyone suggest anything?

Definitely think 4 year old will need his pram with newborn. Is there anything suitable out there that isn't like a tank?

Thank you!

Buggy board might be better? (And cheaper!)

PictureNest · 21/05/2021 14:26

I highly doubt DS will tolerate a buggy board, in fact I know he won't Sad

So that's out! Thank you though, they are good

Phil and teds. You’ll have people up in arms at a 4 yo in a buggy but ignore them. When I had this age gap I didn’t drive and lived in a place where we walked miles and miles every day. Phil and teds was a lifesaver.

Out and about nipper is very light and easy to push, but unless you're walking really long distances most 4 year olds would not need to be in buggy. Buggy board and scooter will encourage them to be more active and independent

We had this one. Great pram, would buy again in a heartbeat.

I second the buggy board, they are brilliant, we got one for our bugaboo chameleon and it also has a seat which you can remove if they just want to stand.

I did get a double pram from my brother when we had DS2, DS1 was 28mths and had not been walking long when he was born, but to be honest it was so big that I barely used it! I ended up selling it on as it just sat in the house taking up space.

I had a carrier for DS2 and quite often would use that and put DS1 in the pram/stroller if he was too tired to sit on the board and wanted a nap. I still use the buggy board occasionally for him now, if we are out for a really long walk, although he usually scoots most places these days.

Does the 4 year old need a specialist buggy as I imagine that could complicate things.

PictureNest · 21/05/2021 14:34

DS doesn't need a specialist pram right now as he's really tiny for 4!

But suspect he might in a few years

How long until baby is here?

Why wouldn't your eldest use a buggy board?

My eldest is 4, he walks everywhere now. We don't even use the buggy board. It's taken work to train him to hold the pushchair and to build up his stamina with walks. He can go quite far now.

Given the gap, I'd get a stroller you can use from newborn and a cloth wrap sling.

Baby in the stroller 90% of the time. Use the wrap if 4 year old is tired and needs the stroller.

I wouldn't get a double because the weight difference between them will make it awkward to push. Also, the 4 year old should be out of the pram soon so won't get much use

ABC zoom. Is quite big, but was perfect when ds2 was 4 and still needed to be in the pushchair (has asd, stop being judgy) would need to buy a separate carrycot for a newborn as the seats are only suitable from 6 months.

Caspianberg · 21/05/2021 14:48

If you think your four year old will need for a few more years due to additional needs, then a side by side with large wheels is probably your best bet. The tandem type seats are usually much smaller.

You might struggle with an older child in a phil & teds, my friend tried one with a fairly tall toddler and the hood was skimming her head.
The Mountain Buggy Urban is a bit of a beast but it's a sturdy pram which would accommodate a larger child fine and you can add a carrycot for the newborn.

PictureNest · 21/05/2021 17:26

Thank you!

As I say though, DS won't be in a disability pram for quite a while as he's small but that'll be coming up before I know it, I suppose

Maybe the best bet is just to have newborn in a sling?

I'm not actually pregnant again yet BlushGrin

You can get special needs pushchairs that also have a seat for a younger sibling. The extra seat comes off. Might that be a better investment because you will have a pushchair that will last DC1 much longer, and you will have a pushchair for DC2 as well.

We have the UppaBaby Vista with rumble seats but DS is very tall so didn’t really fit in it for long.

MattyGroves · 21/05/2021 17:41

Easiest thing is baby in sling, older child in buggy

Sandytoes86 · 21/05/2021 17:56

Phil and Teds , I had my 4 year old and baby in one , very useful and much easier to get around than a side by side . The seat it big enough for my 5 year old so I’m sure it’ll be absolutely fine height wise unless they are very tall. You can get newborn pods and second seats .

LunchWithAGruffalo · 21/05/2021 18:21

Baby jogger is quite a tall seat and often suits older children well. I found the off road buddies with larger wheels easier to push as DS got bigger, some of the side by side ones do have quite narrow seats though. Ideal for getting through doorways, not quite so useful for bigger children.

Mountain buggy used to do a double with one side having an extended leg rest for an older child, might be worth keeping an eye on Ebay if you think you'll be using it for several years.

I found it a bit of a challenge to push the buggy with a baby in the sling on my front, it actually got easier as the baby got bigger and was old enough to go on my back.

Happycat1212 · 21/05/2021 18:30

I hated child in buggy and baby in a sling, I would only recommend a double personally but I’m unusual as I just couldn’t get on with slings. I would get a double.
