Dreadlocks - types and care

I am thinking of getting dreads. I am not sure on what sort, whether to have them just of my natural hair or wool (is it wool?). Does anyone have them? Are they easy to care for? The reason I want them is because I struggle to do my hair other than brush and wash it and I assume they are pretty low maintenance? Thanks!

No experience of dreads but a 2 min google and this site shows while they dont need washing as often as normal, they’re not at all low maintenance

I have Googled and researched, and found a lot to support the fact that they are quite low maintenance. What makes you think they arent? I have messaged a salon for more information but they haven't got back to me yet. I was asking on here for experiences of people who have had them, as I am still undecided!

See I didnt know about the palm rolling... that may be an issue as I only have one working arm! Unless I get the DC involved!

I suppose I could just shave it all off again!

The whole process of washing/drying/products etc looks rather high maintenance to me, but I’m also the kind of person who only really washes, dries and sticks it up in a pony tail so pretty much everything that involves multiple steps and applying products comes across as high maintenance to me! Good luck with them though!

I don't have my hair dreaded but I sometimes wear woollen dread extensions braided into my own hair, they are great for when I want my hair to just be 'done'. The process if putting them in is quite labour intensive but once they are in that's my hair dealt with until I take them out again.

Mine are double ended, I fold in half and braid my own hair down one side and bingo I have two dreads in that spot. I wear around 24 double ended dreads (making for 48 dreads) as I have a pretty high undercut and only have long hair on the top of my head. There are loads of tutorials for how to install them on YouTube.

I go back and forth on getting my own hair dreaded, I want to but it's finding someone to actually do them.

Thank you for responding! See I wouldn't be able to do them myself. I would have to go to the salon I have found. I am just unsure on which way to go. How long do the woollen ones last once you have them in?

I keep mine in for around 6 weeks. By then my hair needs colouring and the whole thing needs tightening up.
