Help..my tooth just snapped off...what will they do?

Clovertoast · 20/05/2021 15:36

I hit myself in the face with a hoover ( don't ask ) about a month ago and some of my tooth broke off. I stupidly ignored it.
Now just bit into my sandwich and my tooth has just crumbled off. There is pretty much no tooth left bar what's under the gum.
I've just called the emergency dentist and am waiting for them to call me back.
What will they do ? Its at front side behind my " fang " tooth , so it's visible when I smile and laugh.
Will they pull the rest out ? How ??
There's nothing to pull !
Will I have a gap? Will they cover it up?
Any advice or experience please...
I'm gutted

Hi OP, you poor thing, what a shock! Yes there are things they can do, Google 'dental bridge' as one example

MargaretFraggle · 20/05/2021 15:40

Don't worry OP. A dentist will be able to fix it. Half my tooth broke off after giving birth and I had something put on it to make it look normal. I had forgotten til I read this post actually

LIZS · 20/05/2021 15:41

They may be able to crown or even fill it.

I broke half my molar down to the gum line and they re moulded it with dental amalgam. Feels fine, i just have to be a little more careful now, no chomping honeycomb for example which is what broke it in the first place :-(

g135 · 20/05/2021 15:44

The top half of my molar sheared off, pretty much to the gum line. (Helpfully while away on holiday). My lovely dentist rebuilt it using little post things. I've now had it replaced with (my mind has gone totally blank on the name) an insert piece they make in the lab and stuck onto the bottom of the tooth (not a crown). I've had quite a few broken teeth and I'm always amazed what dentists can repair. Good luck!

(He also told me if it broke again while I was away, stick chewing gum in the gap so it doesn't irritate your cheek and tongue).

Clovertoast · 20/05/2021 16:00

The emergency dentist just called me back.
They are seeing me at 6.15 but can only give me a temporary solution which may involve pulling it out apparently ??
I explained I didnt want a gap left but she said my actual dentist ( who cant fit me in till June 7th !!! ) would have to try and sort the gap !!
OMG Sad

Unless it hurts or is very sharp you don't really need an emergency dentist appointment.

felineflutter · 20/05/2021 17:47

I have half a tooth so the front of it looks the same but the back is broken to the gum line. It doesn't hurt so I have left it in place.

It has been like this for 2 years. The dentist at the time wanted to take it out but I said I would keep it.

Boopear · 20/05/2021 17:53

Don't worry! Well, not until you see your proper dentist. They may be able to save the tooth - it depends where the break is. Although bear in mind it may be a weak spot later on - they "fixed" mine with amalgam about 2 years ago (back broke off to the gum. While on holiday. Oh what fun), but it now gets lots of infections so am waiting to figure out next options, as it needs out really,

But, yes, it doesn't always mean a gap. And even if the tooth does need to come out, there are loads of options to fill gaps now from the cheap (ish) to full on implants. The dentist will cover all this if needs be.

Clovertoast · 20/05/2021 17:55

I have a broken tooth that's jagged and sharp and very visible @LIZS why wouldn't that be an emergency?
According to 111.net I need to see a dentist.

If it is sharp they may file the edge and put a temporary surface but an emergency dentist won't treat the tooth or fill the gap.

Motherof3dogs · 20/05/2021 18:09

If its not painful I wouldn't have it removed. The sharp edge will wear off. Wait for your own dentist, not so many options once it's gone!

picturesandpickles · 20/05/2021 18:11

Agree if you can bear to wait then do that so you get the range of options. Sorry - losing teeth is stressful. Could you see soemone privately more quickly?

Dentistry is pricey though. Flowers for you.

3Britnee · 20/05/2021 18:20

Denture
Bridge
Implant
There's lots they could do.

I lost a front tooth many years ago. I have a bridge that covers the gap, and it’s been in place for 35 years! It will cost you around £300 on the NHS.
Lemonlemon88 · 20/05/2021 18:29

My brother lost one of his front teeth in a fall, they gave him a plate with a false tooth while they made an implant I think they call it then he had a screw put in his mouth and a new tooth screwed into that. So if you do have to have it removed, there are options!

BananaBoatFeet · 20/05/2021 18:30

I did this recently and I’m now mid way through absolutely painless implant treatment.

RavingAnnie · 20/05/2021 18:37

Don't let them pull it unless it's absolutely necessary as the bone and gum will start to recede. If they need to pull it you can get them to do an immediate implant which will stop any bone (and therefore gum) recession. If you can afford an implant of course.

@BananaBoatFeet is implant treatment really painless? I have two separate gaps and don't know whether to try Maryland bridges or head straight for implants.

Dental pain scares me. A lot.

Spring2021 · 20/05/2021 18:41

Depends how much tooth is left and what the tooth next to it is like will affect options. I did the same in first lockdown. My dentist ended up pulling it out. A bridge wasn’t an option in my case, can have a dental implant cost 2K or tooth I take in and out every day.

shewalkslikerihanna · 20/05/2021 18:47

Had 3 broken teeth in lockdown
Dentists made a great job of rebuilding them all
All ancient teeth all drilled and filled

shewalkslikerihanna · 20/05/2021 18:47

Don’t let them pull it

RobinHumphries · 20/05/2021 19:37

Jeez if you don’t want them to extract the tooth why waste their time?

A dental emergency is severe pain uncontrolled with pain killers, uncontrollable bleeding or swelling

Spring2021 · 21/05/2021 07:37

It depends how badly broken the tooth is as to whether or not it can be saved. The tooth I had that broke had a crown on, the crown broke off taking part of my tooth with it and then a bit more broke off. Their was so little of the tooth left in my case that it had to be pulled. This was with a private dentist not an NHS emergency dentist.
