How did your 16 year old find a part time job?

Dd would like a job to earn some extra money before starting 6th form. I know in current circumstances competition may be fierce and it's not going to amount to anything but I'd like to help her look. Friends of hers all seem to have jobs that were found through friends of their families who have restaurants etc Confused which we don't have. Any ideas?

She made herself a CV and went to door to door to all the shops and takeaways within walking distance of home.

She's now been about 6 weeks in her job answering the phone at a kebab and pizza place, and ironically has just been offered a part-time 'office' job with the community group she's involved with.

She's planning to do both over the summer than decide which is better for her to combine with A levels.

Really difficult!

DS is 17 and has spent the last 18 months job hunting, to no avail - until just now.

Most of his friends seemed to get jobs working with family members etc, we just didn't know anyone who could put in a good word for him!

He's just got a job in a pub, his friend works there and commented to him a few weeks ago that she thought they were going to be looking for more staff for the May 17th reopening so she gave DS the bosses number, and he got an interview before they even advertised! So pure luck really.

It's so difficult these days, when I was a teenager I would have walked up and down the high street asking if shops had jobs and handing over my CV. Now everything is online, I think that makes it easier to find the job but sometimes it good to just chat to the manager!

Advert in the window of Clarks
Advert in mountain warehouse
Recommendation for her pub job
Walk in and ask at Morrison’s
The teens of local friends all seem to have done the Mac Donald’s route too

My 18 year old can’t find a part time for love nor money.

He’s applied for everything for the last two months.

Both started with volunteering in a charity shop to get experience, then got cafe/bar jobs from marching the high street with their CV (always managed to get jobs in independent places this way rather than chains).

Both also got jobs easily for catering companies without waiting experience, but appreciate demand is probably lower for that sort of work at the moment.

My friend's teenagers work in Greggs, hairdressers (doing the hair washing & sweeping etc), Amazon warehouse, corporate hospitality at a major football club (ok, not at the moment but it pays very well apparently), and one is currently packing Covid test kits!

Mine started out by volunteering too. Firstly in a charity shop and then a local independent book shop. DD was then kept on as paid weekend staff at the book shop while DS found evening work in the local corner/mini market type shop. Both were at college too. My step children did much the same at that age, although their dad owned a newsagents at the time and gave them some weekend experience there to flesh out their CV. I'm assuming my younger ones will do the same when the time comes - it's a way off though so who knows what the job climate will be like for them then.

Might be slightly different here as in a v touristy area (and everywhere is understaffed over summer), but these seem to be the main ways for PT seasonal employment:

Indeed job site

Word of mouth (friend works there / friend knows a friend who works there / friend knows a friend who knows a friend who works there / etc)

Facebook job group, search your town jobs

I know few people who got employment by printing off a CV and going round to places. It's not unheard of but seems a bit of a thing of the past here.
