Carpal tunnel, RSI or something else?

I’ve been having pains in my left arm on and off for months.

Usually I wear a wrist support and eventually it goes away. It has returned with a vengeance this time and now whenever I use it too much (like at work) I get shooting pains up both sides of my wrists up to my elbow.

I haven’t contacted my doctor yet as I didn’t think there was much they could do, but I’m thinking, maybe I ought to now.

So what do you think?

You have lots of nerves around the elbow.
I have a trapped ulna nerve and it bloody hurts.
Does the pain travel into your fingers?

See if you can do a self referral to physio through your gp app. Think it's patient access.

Then see gp , they will of course tell you to take pain killer but a referral off them for an X-ray /ultrasound may be a good idea

I get some pain in my thumb but no, not real pain in the fingers. Just the wrist, arm and elbow

May be tendonitis or tennis elbow. I'm not an expert . But they can cause pain from elbow to thumb .
Repeat not an expert but a dementia nurse !

How long can it take to pass? It’s making work a little difficult as I struggle to pick up heavy things without almost dropping them

Go and see a physio, it could be coming from tightness in your pecs and travelling down into your arm

drinkingwineoutofamug · 20/05/2021 10:49

Was told by physio that my ulna nerve damage can take 3-6 months to right itself .
Been off work 7 weeks already and climbing the walls
You have my full sympathy

drinkingwineoutofamug · 20/05/2021 10:50

I also have muscle wastage to the tricep and bicep , due to not being able to move my arm due to pain.
It's pants

Soubriquet · 20/05/2021 10:51

Crap. Right ok. I’ll look at getting some medical help. Thank you

I have the same symptoms but I have developed this lump too. I'm about to go to the doctors about it, but you know - non emergency equals lonnng wait.

Carpal tunnel, RSI or something else?
SellFridges · 20/05/2021 10:58

I had this and it was actually caused by a trapped nerve in my neck. Worth trying an Osteo in my opinion.

Soubriquet · 20/05/2021 11:05

No lump for me. It’s a horrible feeling though. Just working normally and then a sharp throbbing pain makes you hiss and you nearly drop everything

OP posts:
Grizalda · 20/05/2021 11:15

Oh maybe it's not the same then. I get throbs of pain moving both up and down my lower arm on both sides, but it's an annoying dull throbby ache more than really sharp, intense pains.
It comes in phases too. I might be ok for a few weeks then have long periods of it hurting but then it goes .… or at least, it did used to go away fully. It stays sore most of the time now, it just dies down to a barely there "acceptable" level of aching and I can generally ignore it. When it's at peak hurting, it can really bloody hurt and I struggle with movement and lifting.

Is than a ganglion?
Grizalda · 20/05/2021 11:29

Is than a ganglion

Well, I asked Google and he thinks it's either a ganglion or Carpel Boss. I do have a ganglion elsewhere on my body and it's fairly mobile, ie you can move it side to side under the skin.
This doesn't move.

Basecamporbust · 20/05/2021 11:44

Do you do repetitive actions at work - lots of typing, lifting, cleaning, using tools? Do you have young children and lift them , change and dress them? Any of these can cause tendonitis. If you Google tests for carpal tunnel you might get an idea if it could be that but best thing is see GP. There's lots they can do to help - bracing, anti-inflammatory drugs or cream, steroid injection and advise you about how to minimise future problems with it. Keep wearing the brace as much as you can, rest it as much as possible and apply ice when you can. It's soooo painful.

Soubriquet · 20/05/2021 11:49

No.

I’m an online shopper at work so yeah I use a handset but it’s the opposite hand. I use the hurting hand for physically picking things up

OP posts:
WeAllHaveWings · 20/05/2021 11:54

I've had a ganglion in that exact place before, it wasn't particularly mobile there either. Went away after about a year.

I find my arm gets sore with sudden shooting pains up it (either on outside or inside of arm) when I am overusing my ipad/mobile while watching tv/in bed. If I cut right back for a week or so they disappear.

Have you been using more tech over lockdown?

Soubriquet · 20/05/2021 11:57

Blush maybe

Looks like a ganglion...usually harmless and generally disappear overtime
drinkingwineoutofamug · 20/05/2021 12:46

My nana sweared by smacking a ganglion with a bible to get rid.....

WeAllHaveWings · 20/05/2021 15:47
