Deed poll help

Has anyone changed their child's surname by deed poll?
I'm not sure if the the unenrolled version will be acceptable or if I have to pay for an enrolled version?
I know if I want it on public record it goes via .gov and court confirmation

Needs to be accepted by bank, gp and school only at the moment

Has the other parent given permission?
You cant do it legally otherwise (unless a court has agreed it can be done)

FelicityPike · 20/05/2021 10:07

For those things I would pay.
Just remember though your supposed to get everyone with PR’s permission (but I’m sure you know that). Good luck.

Don't know about children but when I changed my name via deed poll it didn't have to be enrolled. I then used that doc (literally printed the form off the internet and witnessed by a couple of friends at my sports club) to change the name on my drivers licence, passport etc. I was surprised at the time how easy it was.

Yes all consent has been given and I have it all in writing (Has a new family wants nothing to do with his daughter 🤬)

I'm not sure you can use a deed poll for a child, but if you have permission then a letter from the other parent should be enough for school, Dr etc.

Emj38 · 20/05/2021 11:24

So long as there's consent you can deed poll for a child

I stand corrected.

In that case use the free one online.

I used the one based in Essex. If you Google “Deed poll Essex” you’ll find it. I know you can do them without charge, but these ones came on heavyweight paper with seals etc and looked very official, which really shouldn’t matter, but persuading GP practices and banks that plain versions are acceptable can be hard work (DSis tried it previously.)

A friend found this. I changed my name on my passport first so I had the deedpoll and both passports.

I did it all online and then got someone to witness it. Came in the post and we then changed everything that needed to be

I'm wondering if to do the unenrolled free one and see if they accept it if the witnesses are of professional bodies, and if not then I'll get an enrolled one paid for 🤔

Hey, late to the thread but I was in the same situation. I changed my boys name by an unenrolled deed poll this year, it was accepted by my doctor and his school etc. I had to provide a letter of authority from both myself and my partner to accompany the deed poll but there where no issues in it being accepted.

I used the UK Deed poll Service, there website Is www.changemyname.org.uk

I hope this is of some help to anyone who finds themselves in this position.
