How do I ask the cleaning lady to stop singing

Blush

for 4 hours she sings non stop, its driving me to distraction!

She generally is very noisy, very heavy handed. I now realise the constant vacuuming is because she never bothers to turn off the vacuum when she is doing something else, but the singing I can't deal with anymore.

How do I tell her (preferably politely) that she needs to shut up.

I assume you WFH? If so I would ask her politely if she could switch off the vacuum when she isn't using it and not sing as it is disrupting your ability to work. You are paying her so you should be able to make this request while she is in your home. I have asked tradesmen to switch off their radio when I have had complex uni work to do and it was distracting me. They were fine about it.

If you're working it should be very simple to explain to her that you need quiet where possible in order to work. If you're not working then plan your errands around her and go out. I've been doing that over the covid period anyway, to be fair to my cleaner and manage her risk.

SnarkyBag · 20/05/2021 08:36

You just have to tell her I’m afraid. The hoover thing would drive me potty too

artquejtion · 20/05/2021 08:40

She is here from 3pm to 7pm, it's when the kids get home from school, so I am home and not working, she is driving the kids nuts too !

That is a strange time to have a cleaner. Can you rearrange her time so she comes when you are out? If not then maybe tell her that you need quiet post school time for the DC to do homework and be calm before bedtime. Just be honest. Tell her the noise she makes is causing issues as you can't relax like people do in the evening.

pickingdaisies · 20/05/2021 08:48

Why are you putting up with it if it's driving the family nuts? What a weird time for a cleaner, wouldn't you like to have that time for the kids to just come and enjoy being home, doing homework etc? It's big girl pants time for you!

crossstitchingnana · 20/05/2021 08:49

Oh my, poor woman. She sounds happy. Your home, unfortunately, is her work place.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 20/05/2021 08:51

Oh that's an unusual time to have a cleaner in... My kids would be making a mess much, much faster than she could tidy... Blush
Just ask her to keep noise to a minimum as you're trying to get homework etc done. I love to hear people singing.

MiddleParking · 20/05/2021 08:52

This has made me chuckle Grin but it would drive me absolutely bananas too OP! I think you need to just ask her to stop. I’d be mortified too though, I go and work elsewhere when my cleaner comes.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 20/05/2021 08:52

Your home, unfortunately, is her work place.

A. Not legally, it isn't.
B. If I sang in my office for four hours every day, I'm pretty sure I'd be called in for a word about it.

myhobbyisouting · 20/05/2021 08:52

Why have her there from 3-7? Personally I'd go out or rearrange her

myhobbyisouting · 20/05/2021 08:53

"My kids would be making a mess much, much faster than she could tidy"

She's a cleaner, not tidying up after the kids.

saraclara · 20/05/2021 08:54

I can't think of a worse time to have a cleaner. So your kids get home from school and can't just wind down? No family time without this woman clattering about?

Iggly · 20/05/2021 08:54

Get a new cleaner.

Strikes me as a compelling reason for her not to be singing the whole time she’s there!
UhtredRagnarson · 20/05/2021 08:55

Change the time she comes to when you’re not there.

DenisetheMenace · 20/05/2021 08:55

“Please will you stop singing”

Zzelda · 20/05/2021 09:23

Do you have her for four hours a day every day? That's an awful lot of cleaning.

I was confused by this. Because it sounds like it, or at least more than once a week.

No, I don’t have her everyday.

It used to be the morning, but then she got another job for more hours and asked if she could change to the afternoon, it was supposed to be 1pm to 5pm but various reasons and public transport mean she pushed it to 3pm to 7pm.

It’s difficult to find a cleaner in our area.

I think I have to ask her to stop singing, as ridiculous as that will probably sound to her.

Dizzy1234 · 20/05/2021 10:25

I wouldn't ask her to stop singing, I'd have already strangled her with my bare hands and I'd be on MN asking what to do with the body 😁
In reality I'd put up with it and be driven slowly insane 🙄

Zzelda · 20/05/2021 10:26

I don't really see why it would sound ridiculous to her to ask her to stop. She'd have to be quite arrogant to assume that everyone enjoyed listening to her.
