Hello I was wondering if you can help.
Just looking for some advice or any one that has experience of hiatus hernias.

My 89 year old granny has one. In the past she has had ‘funny turns’ and she blames it on the Hiatus Hernia.

Anyway I seen one of these ‘funny turns today’ and it was bloody scary.

I’d took her to a local beauty area for her birthday tomorrow. She’s 89 and up untill lockdown she was really active and fit. ( going on cruises, darts, shopping every other day) Lock down has took its toll on her and she has grown ‘old’ over night.

We had been there a while, she had half a glass of procecco if that. ( might be relevant later) I’d just got the coffee out. She’d had food ( scones and sandwiches)

She was talking and suddenly felt dizzy, it started to feel worse so I lifted her feet up. The she had some weird kind seizure. She wasn’t shaking but her eyes were open. She was making a weird noise and was breathing heavily through her nose. She was completely unresponsive. He face looked totally different like it had dropped. I actually thought it was a stroke at first.

She started coming round and was sick as I was on the phone to the ambulance. She was dazed and it took her a while to realise she’d had a ‘funny turn’

She didn’t want to go to hospital but we waited till the ambulance came so they could check her out as I was scared to death. She got in the ambulance a very frail shakey old lady.

30 mins later ambulance door opened and she was smiling and they said she was completely fine! She’d told them she has these ‘funny turns’ about twice a month. They told me this was normal for her. They are going to write a letter to her GP.

I dropped her back off at home with a relative who confirmed that indeed some times ‘she just goes weird and her face drops’

I called in to see another relative who lives near and they said she’d actually had a funny turn out side the local shop last week and had to sit on the floor.

She was gassy after and She was yawning a lot just before the ‘funny turn’

But it really wasn’t funny. I felt like it was a seizure of some kind. How can this be connected to her stomach? She was completely out of it.

Sorry it’s long!

My mum is 72 and has a hiatus hernia.

She doesn't get like this at all

She does get terrible acid reflux which makes her sick sometimes though

Thank you for replying I’m worried to death about her.

I have a 3cm sliding hiatus hernia and Prosecco makes me feel really sick afterwards, not exactly a funny turn though

Hello. I don't think this is related to a hiatus hernia (but I'm not a medical professional). A family member has one, and a friend, and neither have these episodes.

I have seen my own Nan go a bit like this, and the paramedic said she had fainted. Do you think she perhaps knows what has caused this but doesn't want to tell you in case you worry? Can you go with her to the GP to see what they say (obviously she'd have to agree to this herself)?

Just to clarify, my Nan is not my family member with a hiatus hernia.

I have this too. Diagnosed as a once off. Fizzy drinks exasperated it.
Prescription was for nexum and told to double it if have an attack. Has worked now for 4 years. Spent 5 days as an inpatient and have been fine since

I’ve been thinking I’m going to see if she will allow me to go GP with her as they are happening much frequently than she is letting on to me. I speak to her daily! It’s also really unsafe for her to go out by herself.

We are due to go away on holiday at Xmas and I’ve already been suggesting she takes her mobility scooter which she hates so maybe she was playing it down incase i said it wasn’t safe for her.

I could kick myself over that glass of fizz! It was only half a glass as it was. Sad
