Fleas are driving me up the wall.

After a few weeks of horribly itchy, spotty ankles, I googled and it looks like there are fleas in my house! I live with two DS and they're completely unaffected. I spotted a flea on me last week, just after I'd done the school run, and then another this morning, again after walking DS to school.
We don't have pets but did have a cat, who died about 3 months ago. She could have bought fleas into the house and their larvae could be hatching now... I've washed everything, am hoovering daily, but I can't actually see fleas at all, and I've inspected closely! I'm a bit of a clean freak anyway so this is freaking me out.
Any tips?!

Could you be picking them up when out walking eg. If you're going through grassy areas. They won't live for long without an animal to feed and live on. You could try Indorex spray in the house if you really think that's where they are

We did a few things after an infestation a few years ago and they haven’t come back since.
Flea bomb every room- can get good stuff from the vets.
After flea bombing put a bowl of boiling water on the floor and shut the door. The fleas jump into the water as attracted to the heat and they drown.
Hot wash all towels, clothes, sofa cushions etc.
When flea bombed and rooms aired, hoover the shit out of the place.
Good luck! X

Flea eggs lay dormant and hatch when the weather warms up (or when central heating goes on). So you cat could have brought them in.

We suffer with the bastards too and I’ve found a few over the past few weeks even though the cat is treated and wears a collar.

Never found a product that obliterates them.

Me and Ds get bitten to death, Dh and the dds are left alone!

Unlikely demented- we live in a town and so I don't walk through grass. I have also thought that about them not living long without a host...
Do you have to leave the house for a long time after flea bombing noshow? That sounds like a plan...

Indorex spray is excellent and will clear the infestation. You can buy it on amazon and it's the one vets recommend.

Clawdy · 19/05/2021 09:19

We had fleas in our house after taking an elderly neighbour's cat to the vet's. We used a flea spray and sprayed all round skirting boards each day , living room and bedroom, and washed all bedlinen after spotting two on the duvet (shudder!) They did go, but it took a at least a week of spraying.

Alexapissoff · 19/05/2021 09:20

The best thing I ever did when it was bad once was put a plate of hot water mixed with washing up liquid on the floor with a small battery operated lamp on a small cup in the middle over night.

Fleas attracted to the light and drown (the soap breaks the surface tension of the water).

The next morning it was just a sea dead fleas and then we treated the carpets, sofas etc.

Some years seem to be worse than others. I’ve never had a year with none at all, no matter how well the cat has been treated (and he always is).

Call in the experts. My BIL had an infestation in his new home and had a company come in and do some sort of smoke bomb. It had to be done twice, but it sorted the problem.

RogueRebel · 19/05/2021 09:27

Fleas can lay dormant in a house for months waiting for the right conditions, I had this a few months after moving to a new house.
Spray the whole house with a good house spray I have always used "indorex" house spray it's about £10 and one can will do a 3 bed house. Wash all bedding and soft furnishing on a hot wash and repeat a couple of months down the line.

TheQueef · 19/05/2021 09:27

Clicked to post Indorex.
Had pets forever and indorex is the business.
Two cans, blitz everything twicce.

My sympathy, I taste nice to fleas too.

SilentPanic · 19/05/2021 09:29

Have just ordered Indorex! On behalf of my ankles, thank you!

We had this last year. Indorex didn't touch it. Paid for the council to come out and spray the house twice and that finally sorted it!

Noshowlomo · 19/05/2021 10:48

No @SilentPanic just do room by room and keep doors closed and the windows open in that room

spiderlight · 19/05/2021 12:02

Another vote for Indorex. I also steamed all our floors every day for several days when our dog had fleas last summer. No problems since.

ImFree2doasiwant · 19/05/2021 12:10

Yes, indorex. Hoover thoroughly first, spray. Use plenty, don't forget the edges, sofa etc. Then dobt hover again for at least a few days. Repeat weekly for 3 weeks.

CoffeeChocolateGin · 19/05/2021 12:18

Yes we paid someone to come in too. They come twice as part of the one payment.

mygrandchildrenrock · 19/05/2021 12:24

We've had cats for over 40 years and only had fleas once. We sprayed and hoovered more than you can begin to imagine for about 6 weeks and have been fine since, that was a good few years ago.
I am fairly religious about de fleaing the cats and dog though!

Seeingadistance · 19/05/2021 12:28

You could get another cat and make sure it’s regularly deflea’ed. That way, the fleas jump onto the cat and die!

Also, hot wash everything, hoover carpets, soft furnishings etc - put a flea collar inside Hoover to kill fleas you hoover up. Indorex spray also very good.

SilentPanic · 19/05/2021 12:32

Thanks all! Not only have I ordered the Indorex, I'm now wearing leggings tucked into socks in the hope that my poor ankles will be left alone. It's one of those things that once you think about them, you start to itch everywhere and obsess about it...
