Creating new habits & making small changes to improve your life

Long story short I’ve had a really crap year with my marriage ending due to ex husbands affair, burn out in work, selling family home etc.
My mood is so up and down and I want to make some changes and create new habits to try to improve things. I have all these ideas but would love to hear what small changes have benefited you the most.

The things I’m thinking of include-
Starting to take multivitamins
Trying to walk 10k steps every day
Starting a gratitude journal
Reading more
Eating breakfast everyday

Buy fresh flowers, new bedding washed weekly, bubble baths, new pjs

A short session of Yoga wth Adrienne (on YouTube) is very beneficial.

She has lots of options from a few minutes to an hour and some are very simple if you haven't done yoga before.

It is such a subjective thing!

My list would be:
Obtain more lovely pets (have recently hatched more beautiful ducklings)
By more plants (despite having too many already)
Go to bed earlier!

*Buy more plants.

Meet with a friend regularly, once a week, cover new routes, take photos of the scenery, create memories and chat at the same time - uplifting in lots of ways.

Good luck OP.
I have finally made a habit of taking vitamins. I made it easy by buying chewy ones so they are just like sweets!
My next challenge is to clean my makeup off before bed. I feel so much fresher when I do but often flip into bed exhausted.

Have a google for 'James clear habits' and you'll find some great info which I found really useful.

I have made two changes this year which have massively improved my life.

The first is hugely cutting down on alcohol. I did dry January and then just kept going! Very occasionally have a drink, but don’t really fancy it anymore. Last year I would have at least a glass of wine 4-5 times a week, and there’s not a single aspect of my life (sleep, health, marriage, sex-life, appearance, fitness etc) which has not improved as a result.

The second is getting off Facebook & Instagram. I used to spend so much time on them & would constantly be comparing myself to others, or getting upset about stupid crap people were saying on FB.

Trying not to get angry
Saves a lot of stress Wink

Taking each day as it comes
Trying to accept bad days doesn't mean I'm a failure

I found listening to Atomic Habits so so motivating. It was really brilliant.

It mainly changed my mornings, tbh.

I grow micro herbs on my bedroom window sill. It is nice to see some greenery and I can pretend I am a poncey chef when I make a sandwich Grin

That's really interesting Maidens. I've been looking at this book.

Can you expand re mornings? Said in hope

TenCornMaidens · 19/05/2021 11:15

I have chronic health problems and don't work, and my kids are older, so before the pandemic I was really struggling to get going in the mornings. Listening to AH was so so helpful in just helping me think through how to change that: what was a bad habit I wanted to stop (browsing on my phone instead of getting up) and how (plug my phone in downstairs before bed), how to set myself up for success with better habits.

The principles are so universal that I listen to it about once a year now just to sort of boost my 'do it' mentality and make some changes.

Walking and reading are both really good. I have a copy of Atomic Habits on my TBR shelf - must get on to it v. soon. It looks very practical, hopefully will help get me get my arse in gear. I wouldn't get too hung up on 10k steps per day - that's 8km which is a lot of walking, great when you get it done but don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good and all that.

I like having a clean, tidy environment, really makes me feel better, but I hate the effort required to get there Sad I am trying to motivate myself to have another go at 30 Days to a Clean and Organised House by Katie Berry, and then adopting TOMM to try and stay on top of things. I get the basics done, not living in chaos, but I want better than that!
