Just had to email the school about DS1’s reading book. He’s 6!!!

This isn’t a moan about the school, his teacher replied straight away with an apology, but I’m shocked Shock

Awful slur! Well done for calling it out we don't need kids exposed to that kind of word, they likley wouldn't understand its weight until older and could think it's a general insult or funny

When DC was 7, they came home with a library book about Jack the Ripper featuring photographs of the mutilated corpses of his victims! Thankfully I was in the habit of checking their book bag daily and intercepted it before they'd had the chance to have a look.

Obviously I complained to the school but I was never really offered an explanation.

I'm really impressed at your son's reading level for his age! I was an extremely early reader & remember being well into the Voyage of the Dawn Treader when I was six, then soon after Not A Penny More Not A Penny Less by Jeffrey Archer. I loved them at that age & still remember how much they captivated me. I think your son might really enjoy them as well.

Just looked it up, the Treetops series seems to be aimed at KS2, designed for children in yr 3-6 who still need graded readers.

So potentially useful books, but not good for extending your advanced KS1 children.

(having said that, I must remind myself that having read almost all Roald Dahl's books in year 1, my son then read and enjoyed his autobiographies in year 2, age 6 ...)

I am a bit dubious that the level is pitched correctly for him. He’s certainly capable of reading the books, but the content and themes are a bit too much.

At home he enjoys the Harry Potter books, Roald Dahl, Horrid Henry etc.

He’s just gone up to the current reading level, so I’ve not previously had the opportunity to discuss it with the teacher, but hopefully this will prompt him to look a bit more carefully at the books he’s giving him.

We have those books in school. I’ve just checked them. They are a much later publication and that word is no longer in the book. It might be worth suggesting to the school that they update their copy.

That’s interesting! Thanks for that, will do.
