Is it normal for GP’s not to say why a blood test needs repeating

Rung receptionist as I feel stressed by it she couldn’t tell me just said it says to repeat them. Is this normal for their not to be a reason why?

Receptionists are not in a position to know.

boredinthouse · 18/05/2021 13:06

Yes it's normal for receptionists not to tell you.

Hopdathelf · 18/05/2021 13:17

Normal for the receptionist not to tell you and normal for the GP not to know. It can be something as prosaic as a dropped test tube, fire alarm went off and disrupted a test. No point worrying over nothing until you’re told otherwise. Worry and you suffer twice.

It's often due to insufficient sample, or some other simple issue.

Thisismycon · 18/05/2021 13:18

I understand she obviously can tell me the results but in my old surgery they told me that the blood had clotted so couldn’t be test and that’s why I had to go back.

I should add the receptionist may not know why, just that there needs to be a repeat.

Ughmaybenot · 18/05/2021 13:20

Haven’t you already posted about this?
It could be any number of things, most of which were posted on the other thread. Most likely is that one of the results was borderline and they want to double check it. But it might have been lost or something else equally inconsequential health-wise.

QueenPaw · 18/05/2021 13:21

It could be anything from dropping the sample to it being a bit low
If it's serious, they ring you or even turn up at your door. I wouldn't worry

LIZS · 18/05/2021 13:22

You really should not be so anxious about this. If it were suspicious you would be recalled urgently and it seems that is not the case. It could be one marker was out of range and a second test a few weeks later will show if it has resolved. Or that the sample was not sufficient or contaminated. If you really need reassurance make a gp or nurse appointment.

Thisismycon · 18/05/2021 13:24

I asked why it might be the case I didn’t ask if it was normal for it not to be in the records.

The only way to move forward is to give another sample of blood to allow whatever tests are needed to be done.
Worrying about the whys and wherefores of why a result was not obtained doesn't get you anywhere?

Thisismycon · 18/05/2021 13:45

I understand that but I don’t think it would be that hard to just say for example it was a lab issue theseno problem with your bloods

flashylamp · 18/05/2021 13:49

I would assume a lab error if I had a blood test and was asked to repeat it.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 18/05/2021 13:57

I had this, but was offered a call with the GP. Spoke to him only to find that it actually wasn't a it deal at all

Elsiebear90 · 18/05/2021 14:24

I work in a pathology lab, labs get blamed all the time when most of the time the issue is with whoever took the sample. The sample is probably either lost/underfilled/clotted/not stored correctly/in the wrong tube.
