Car insurance question

Until recently we had 2 cars, a small hatchback and a big SUV. They weren't his n hers, we basically each drove the car that was most suitable for our day, which for me usually meant the smaller one as our car park at work is very tight, but would be the bigger one when I had DC or other passengers with me.

DH is ill and no longer able to leave the house, let alone drive, so I've sold the big car, which I've always hated anyway.

However, this has presented some small difficulties. Occasionally you do need something bigger than a small hatchback to accommodate passengers or luggage - we have young adult sons both over 6 ft.

DS1 has a driving licence and is insured to drive the small car. He doesn't drive it often, once or twice a week max, but sometimes it will be when I also need it. DS2 has just got his provisional licence and is also insured to drive it for practice .

So, I'm planning to replace the stupidly big car with a more sensible family car, bigger than the small hatchback but not huge. DH is unable to drive so can't be named as the main driver on either of them.

Can I be main driver on both?. In reality this is what I will be. I will continue to use the small car for work by preference and would only use the larger one for family trips, weekend outings with friends (I'm part of a sports team that shares lifts) or on rare occasions where DS and I both want a car at the same time. However, I realise it will look a bit dodgy and people may think the small car is mainly driven by DSs.

It hasn't been a problem because no one's been going anywhere apart from work (and DS1 walks) but as social life opens up that's changing.

You can be main driver on both if you truly will drive it more frequently. And make sure you select the right use of the vehicle I.e commuting. As long as your sons are named drivers you’ll all be ok and covered by the policy. You can be a main driver on any amount of cars if that’s accurate there’s no limit I’m aware of. Double check multicar policies. You may get a good deal

The only 'people' that matter are the insurance. I expect it would come into question if one of the DC have an accident, on the way to work or something, which might make them suspicious they are using it more frequently that claimed.

But, perhaps harshly, it sounds like you're clinging to keep 2 cars for yourself. I get the car park is tight, but it doesn't sound like its wholly impossible as its okay to use a big car some days when the dcs are using the car. You will get used to parking a bigger car in the tight car park.

You can put one of the dc as the main driver on the smaller car, allow them to get a years no claims, even if they are not using it frequently. But I wouldn't be surprised if as things open up, they do want to use it more, and then it would be fronting if you're the main driver but using it less.

That was a really long winded way of asking if you can be the main driver on 2 cars.

Yes, you can.

On the days I have to use the big car I usually leave it on the street at work

Or go in early to get parked before it's busy. In reality, even if DS does start using it more it's going to be evenings and weekends. He doesn't ever use it for work.
