Are dandelions taking over Britain?

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 17/05/2021 07:14

Is it just me, or are there billions of them, everywhere? Is it because it's been such a dry and cold spring? I don't remember this happening last year as much!
While we were driving past whole fields of them yesterday, my daughter decided that the collective noun for the flowers is a Roar and for the clocks a Tick Tock. I love this!

PML at the “dandelion” claiming she will disappear once she has improved the soil!
My flower beds have been infested by millions of them every year for the past thirty eight years. The soil is fine. The wind blows dandelion seeds all over the village every year from the adjoining fields - we will never be free of the damn things.

CPsRus · 17/05/2021 09:37

Highly sought after in Singapore! www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/may/16/the-dandelion-blows-away-collectors

Honeyroar · 17/05/2021 09:42

There are so many because last year was such a good year for them. And I agree, I’ve never seen any disappear when they’ve “fixed” the soil. I also don’t think we need to cultivate them, there are plenty around already.

BettyUnderswoob · 17/05/2021 09:49

So lovely to read the post from the real, live dandelion! 🌼

mogloveseggs · 17/05/2021 09:52

Not mowed here because the dandelions are out. Feed the leaves to the rabbit she loves them.

senua · 17/05/2021 10:02

They'll have seeded last year when council services were being redirected in early lockdown and landscape maintenance wasn't being carried out in dandelion season.

This. As the old saying goes: "One year's seed, seven years weed."
Don't say you haven't be warned!

Tal45 · 17/05/2021 10:08

I hate the bloody things, they're up there with docks, ground elder, bindweed, plantain and cow parsley as things that are really hard to get rid of and try to completely take over.
I love wildflowers - just not ones that take over to that extent and are really hard to eradicate :-(

lucyslocketinherpocket · 17/05/2021 10:10

There are hundreds! Helped along by my children who love blowing them everywhere no doubt.

We're not even doing No Mow May deliberately , but so far in May we've not had one dry day to cut it so the gardens look like a jungle!!

WhatMattersMost · 17/05/2021 10:16

Dandelion leaves are lovely in scrambled eggs.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 17/05/2021 10:17

I like them too. My DS‘s have lovely dandelion print dungarees which I adore. Love watching the bees in our garden too, we have lots more dandelions this year than usual but I’m leave them alone.

YourCakesAreShit · 17/05/2021 10:27

I love dandelions. Such happy flowers with their big yellow faces turned up to the sun. And then the fluffy clocks like little domes. Beautiful plants.

BagORats · 17/05/2021 12:20

If I don't cut my grass I can't find the dog muck to pick it up. I've got enough flowers in my flower beds for the bees and other pollinators. Dandelions might be early but I've read their nutrient value is quite poor in comparison to others

If we make it easy for honey bees to collect poor quality pollen by creating a lawn full of dandelions – that is what they will collect. A lawn of dandelions keeps bees away from more nutritious pollen.

nameme8746 · 17/05/2021 12:50

Can I ask a stupid question?! Are the yellow ones and the fluffy seeded ones both dandelions?

RightOnTheEdge · 17/05/2021 12:56

nameme8746 Yes they are Smile

nameme8746 · 17/05/2021 12:57

Thank you, are they at different stages or do some grow yellow and some with the seeds?!

Comefromaway · 17/05/2021 12:59

That's really interetsing reading.

I have dandelions taking over my lawn and my flowerbeds and want rid.

I've got several trees for the bees. My crab apple is in beautiful flower at the moment, the cherry is waning a bit.

@Indoctro

🌼💛 Hello, I'm a dandelion. A lot of people call me a weed but I'm a friend and come to help you! . When you see me, remember that I'm the ONLY one who wants and can grow in that particular spot. Because: . Either the soil is too compact / hard / stomped and I want to loosen it for you with my roots. . Or there is too little calcium in the soil - don't worry, I will replenish that for you with the dying of my leaves. . Or the soil is too acidic. But I will also improve that for you if you give me the chance. Or a mixture of the above reasons, of course. 😊 . I'm here because your soil needs my help so best you let me grow without disturbing me! When everything is fixed, I will disappear again, I promise! . Are you trying to remove me prematurely with my root? However meticulous you are, I will return 2x as strong! Just until your soil is improved. . You can even tell by my growth at which stage my help is at. If my leaves are flat on the ground then I'm far from ready but if they all reach up then I'm already a long way on my way. . Something completely different is that I am 1 of the first bloomers in spring so I will announce spring / summer for you. . During the day when it's hot, I open my flowers but in the evening when it cools off I close them again quickly. In fact, if it's not hot enough during the day I won't open them at all! . My flowers are the first food for insects after hibernation and unlike most other plants, I have pollen AND nectar, not merely one OR the other! And I am generous with them! 🤪😉 . My flowers are even delicious for you people by the way, did you know? I used to be called ′′honey (or gold) of the poor′′ because my flowers are so sweet in e.g. jam, sauce or salad! The internet is full of recipes - check them out. But wait until the end of May or later before you start picking and even then, don't pick everything yet! The biodiversity and bees will be very grateful!

Aww that's beautiful 😭

We are doing NO MOW MAY and the garden looks beautiful. I've really noticed the birds coming down for a feed, the bees and even some butterflies.

If people really like their lawn meticulously perfect can you at least leave a strip of wildness?
I've managed to persuade DH to just mow a path through the jungle grass (but not till June!!).

The constant rain has ensured we've inadvertently also done no mow May!

They’ve been incredibly beautiful this year

Babdoc · 17/05/2021 17:00

I have mowed as usual and still have loads of bees - because I have large flower beds packed with all the stuff they love.
The pulmonaria is absolutely humming with them! I have lilacs, bluebells, azaleas, rhododendrons, kerria, tulips, primroses and forget me nots all in full flower, to be followed by roses, lavender, lupins, foxgloves, snapdragons, peonies, Joseph’s coats, campanula, buddleia, mock orange, etc etc. The bees don’t seem interested in the dandelions that I keep ripping out!

Crankley · 17/05/2021 18:43

They have definitely colonised my lawn but I'm happy, they are part of the ecology of our land, all part of nature. I'm not interested in a striped, barren lawn, would rather see birds and insects enjoying it all.

Londonmummy66 · 17/05/2021 19:14

Dandelion leaf pesto is rather good. I made some last week and added some wild garlic leaves - another brilliant wild plant that will actually grow in the dark bits that never get any sun!

Indoctro · 19/05/2021 09:56

A post David Attenborough posted about dandelions

Here are some interesting facts about the dandelion flower:

The dandelion is the only flower that represents the 3 celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars. The yellow flower resembles the sun, the puff ball resembles the moon and the dispersing seeds resemble the stars.

The dandelion flower opens to greet the morning and closes in the evening to go to sleep.

Every part of the dandelion is useful: root, leaves, flower. It can be used for food, medicine and dye for coloring.

Up until the 1800s people would pull grass out of their lawns to make room for dandelions and other useful “weeds” like chickweed, malva, and chamomile.

The name dandelion is taken from the French word “dent de lion” meaning lion’s tooth, referring to the coarsely-toothed leaves.

Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant.

Dandelion seeds are often transported away by a gust of wind and they travel like tiny parachutes. Seeds are often carried as many as 5 miles from their origin!

Animals such as birds, insects and butterflies consume nectar or seed of dandelion.

Dandelion flowers do not need to be pollinated to form seed.

Dandelion can be used in the production of wine and root beer. Root of dandelion can be used as a substitute for coffee.

Dandelions have sunk their roots deep into history. They were well known to ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, and have been used in Chinese traditional medicine for over a thousand years.

Dandelion is used in folk medicine to treat infections and liver disorders. Tea made of dandelion act as diuretic.

If you mow dandelions, they’ll grow shorter stalks to spite you.

Dandelions are, quite possibly, the most successful plants that exist, masters of survival worldwide.

A not so fun fact: Every year countries spend millions on lawn pesticides to have uniform lawns of non-native grasses, and we use 30% of the country’s water supply to keep them green.

The front lawn in our old house used to be covered in what I think is a type of dandelion - smaller yellow flowers, tighter clocks and long stems. I loved them and happily left them. We have those bloody horse tail weeds in this garden. I miss those colourful dandelions.
