How much petrol money would you charge someone for 10 miles/week of driving?

If you were giving someone a lift several times a week that amounted to 10 miles of driving a week, how much would you charge them?

It will be for around a year.

Yep. Adding £25 to your keep is reasonable. Paying for ALL their petrol is just nuts!

SwimBaby · 17/05/2021 12:11

Offer £15 per week.

dottiedodah · 17/05/2021 12:15

saraclara Yes maybe this is a bit much! I still drive my DD about and dont ask for any cash.The parents are having to get up early ,and save OP from a rather unpleasant walk though .As others have said ,maybe add £40 a month on top of keep? Her parents are retired and not well off so this may help them a lot!

CellyBee · 17/05/2021 12:20

£25/month

They WANT to though. And claim it's about her safety. If it's actually about needing the money, then they could just ask her for a bit extra for her keep. Not guilt her into letting them take her 'because otherwise they'll be worried about her safety' so they can have some extra funds.
Jumpingintosummer · 17/05/2021 12:25

Minus annual leave a full tank would get me almost the entire working year of my commute was 10miles a week.

Triffid1 · 17/05/2021 12:30

OP, you have a problem in that one parent clearly is taking the piss and the other one is just being kind. Unless they only use the car to drive you to work and do their weekly shop, you filling up the car every time it's needed is completely bonkers.

I think that if the parent who wants this to an actual paid job is to be appeased, then do it based on time and petrol. So, max 50p mile = £5 (more than recommended government amount). Then, let's say 10 minutes a day, but sure, we can make it 15 minutes to accommodate traffic etc, paid at a generous £10/hour would be 15 minutes x 5 = 75 minutes so 1 hour and a quarter pay = £12.50. So a maximum of £17.50 per week. Or, perhaps, a tank of petrol a month (depending on size of car).

Bluebird76 · 17/05/2021 12:35

I'd be walking or scooting (well cycling personally - is that an option? A mile is a 5 minute ride, if that). Even with a long day of work, it'll clear your head, give you exercise and fresh air, save on petrol money and not bother your parents. They don't get to insist, it's your decision!

MrsJBaptiste · 17/05/2021 13:19

It's a kind offer and a bargain at £10 a week imo

It's not a bargain if the OP is happy to walk but her parents are insisting on driving her and making her part with £40 a month!

SwimBaby · 17/05/2021 13:21

So would you do the unsafe walk on your return journey?

Anordinarymum · 17/05/2021 13:21

Since it is your mum and dad and they are doing it out of love, I would give them £25 as another poster suggested.. and a bottle of wine :)

Nancydrawn · 17/05/2021 13:36

In that case, I think you give them a set amount of money a week. £10 a week is very generous and is more than five times what the petrol costs; if that's too much, I'd do it by month and perhaps raise your family contribution by £25 month or so.

But I really wouldn't pay for petrol whenever. That way lies frustration and conflict (if not madness).

BackforGood · 17/05/2021 15:08

Seriously, they are being unrealistic to ask you to fill the tank when it is needed, unless they only ever drive to take you somewhere.
To do 1mile to the station and 1 mile back x 5 days a week is barely going to use £2 of petrol across a week.

I do get the point of their time (as I said in my first post yesterday) BUT it could cost £40 to fill up their tank (more if a car with a big tank). You'd be cheaper to negotiate with a local taxi company to drive you each morning if that is what they are asking for.

CorianderBee · 17/05/2021 16:17

@tararabumdeay

It's not really about the 10 miles though; it's about their time and commitment to. Do you expect them to drive you to the station and stay there till they have to deliver you home after work? If there was a bus it would easily cost you £3 a day (or more). Don't be mean. £15 a week minimum.
Why would they stay at the station a mile up the road instead of just driving back? Wth it's about 5 minutes away
CorianderBee · 17/05/2021 16:21

I'd offer £30/40 a month OP. Don't pay for ALL their fuel for 25 mins driving each week.. that's absurd

SkodaKodiaq · 18/05/2021 16:08

@Ohdeariedear

Tenner a week?
£1 a mile?! Crikey that's London cab charges!
BarbaraofSeville · 18/05/2021 16:21

Does the car teleport back from the station?

Blossomtoes · 18/05/2021 16:24

None. It wouldn’t be worth the bother.

SkepticalCat · 18/05/2021 16:24

@BarbaraofSeville

It's one mile there, one mile back home. One round-trip each weekday morning.

Hence 10 miles per week.

Mrsmadevans · 18/05/2021 16:30

I would rather walk tbh.
