Would you hide/deny it if your family were on the Times Rich List?

Just that really?
Assuming your family normally kept under the radar as to their level of wealth but someone saw and asked you if that’s your relatives (and in part you). Would you deny it? Be ashamed? Worry about their reaction?

Is tell the truth. They don’t care about how much money you or your family have. They will care about you lying to them.

Grimacenotgrommet · 16/05/2021 21:14

I don’t think I would. I think I’d hide it if I could for sure

I suppose it depends how obvious it is and if your friends will expect to buy all the drinks!

Saz12 · 16/05/2021 21:32

If J could laugh it off / evade the question I would.

battenburgwithtea · 16/05/2021 21:38

I'd be pleased as it meant I'm likely to inherit loads of wedge so it's a nice problem to have

Wafflewombat · 16/05/2021 21:41

I used to work for someone who was in the list, one up from Mick Jagger, iirc. Normal, albeit now very rich, people. Wouldn't want publicity personally but...

fallfallfall · 16/05/2021 21:41

People kids etc get kidnapped and occasionally held for random.
I might admit we are related but minimize how close we are.

Depends who it is in your family. And some people don't even want their children to inherit!

I had a friend at uni who was very quiet about her wealth because she thought she would be rejected. In our second year, she hosted a party and I'm sorry to say there were bitchy comments made, even down to "deliberately showing off" because of the bathroom products. I was close to her and she was a lovely kind person but some people won't forgive you for being rich and pretty and clever...she was all three.

HalzTangz · 16/05/2021 22:06

I would say as youve stated a thread your inner self Wants people to know your family are loaded.
If you were on the downlow about it, you wouldn't have started.

Longdistance · 16/05/2021 22:11

I’d hate that sort of publicity. Is it your family @Grimacenotgrommet?

Grimacenotgrommet · 16/05/2021 22:33

@HalzTangz it’s not me! And even if it was, given this is completely anonymous I don’t see how you would conclude that.

My cousin is top 250 on the list. Very, very low profile although he has all the toys (boat, plane, helicopter). Generous, but in a normal way (pays the bill for family meals out). Doesn't do celebrity things and they live a rather middle class life, but with lots of money.

He built the whole thing himself, from nothing, supported by his lovely wife. I admire them both enormously and love their company but expect nothing from them as he is my cousin, not my brother or Dad.

He works punishingly long hours and I prefer my own life but he has achieved what he set out to do but did so without becoming a household name.

FabulouslyFab · 16/05/2021 22:52

My sister’s father in law is on the list but you would never know. It’s not flaunted but they work hard and have a comfortable lifestyle.

Icanflyhigh · 16/05/2021 23:03

If my family are on it, they're hiding it pretty fucking well.....😂😂

MrsBarnstable · 17/05/2021 07:27

I'd acknowledge that they were related but downplay the relationship as its not anyone else's business

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2021 08:37

Well you don't have to tell people about it and many people's friends and family probably don't even read the rich list, so you might get away with it.

But you can't deny it if it's out there for all to see, although I suppose you could play it down - I don't know how these things are calculated but it might not mean you have loads of free cash, more valuable assets. Eg many stately home owners have a very big expensive house, but it's a money pit that costs millions to run and maintain so they might not be able to have a 'millionaire lifestyle' of cars, private jets etc as well as run the massive house.

It's not a lifestyle I aspire to. I have no desire for a big fancy house, expensive possessions, showy cars etc. I'd be perfectly happy with a million or two, enough to not have to work and to buy a 3/4 bed house somewhere warm but quiet. I'd expand my hobby investments to making an income and spend my time swimming in the sea, walking reading and eating out, but in local, normal places, beach shacks etc not fancy restaurants and have my friends and family come to stay. You don't need many millions to be able to do that.

Alexapissoff · 17/05/2021 08:42

No I would dress in gold and poop on the plebs.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/05/2021 09:05

My work colleague is related to a world famous celeb. She doesn't hide it, no one treats her any differently. She is not wealthy herself and not in line for inheritance.

JustKeep · 17/05/2021 09:11

I’d probably downplay it. We’re wealthier than some of our friends and try not to make it obvious as money can be such an awkward topic. We don’t want to make money into an issue in our relationships, so are not obvious about it.

BlueAgean · 17/05/2021 09:31

I think it would be distasteful for a real friend to ask that question. It should be irrelvant to a friend. I'd probably be vague/evasive to a non friend. Maybe emphasise it was related to my familys work, or that they also did a lot for charity.
