Potentially stupid question

Let me preface this by stating how utterly terrified I am of the dentist; traumatic experiences as a child etc etc. This is compounded by covid right now, as I'm clinically vulnerable.

I have a sore jaw, left side, right at the back. It isn't super painful but has woken me up a couple of times over the last few days. The discomfort switches between upper and lower jaw but is always at the back of my mouth. Right now, it's a mild ache, but has gone completely and been moderately painful with no sort of predictability or pattern. Paracetamol sorts it out until it wears off.

If this was toothache it wouldn't get better or move right? Like something that would require a dentist intervention. I think I have one wisdom tooth but honestly have no idea. I can't ask DH as he will tell me to get checked out either way. If its likely to be wisdom tooth related I can manage the discomfort until it settles but don't want to leave something that will get worse and require much more intervention.

Get it checked out. The first thing my dentist does at a check up (and I had one yesterday) is feel along my jaw and ask if I’ve had any pain.

Yes, you do need to see a dentist. Don't worry about covid, the surgery will be really clean, the staff vaccinated and they all have PPE.

Yeah you are going to have to get seen. It could be wisdom tooth related but it's possible that it is impacted which will get progressively worse and risk your other molars if left. It could also be an infection. You need an xray to find out what is causing it.

When I had wisdom trouble the symptoms were almost identical to yours. My dentist said it was sometimes hard to pinpoint the pain and it can appear to move, because there are so many nerves involved in that area.

So I read this this morning nd then promptly hid and avoided it because it wasn't what I wanted to hear. The pain has gone today but I will consider going to the dentist and getting checked out if it comes back.

Honestly I wish they could knock me out before I get in the building and sleep through the whole experience.
