Are Ikea sofas any good?

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 16/05/2021 19:27

We really need a new sofa and the fully washable covers appeal to me. Do the cushions last well or do they start to sag after a while? Any other recommendations if not Ikea?

I've had mine for 20 years. Could do with replacing but only because the cats have mauled it. It's a sofa bed and pretty comfy for a sofa bed.

aiwblam · 16/05/2021 22:26

Took us 15 years (with big family and dogs) to wreck our Ektorp. Replaced it with another.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/05/2021 22:26

I love my GRÖNLID, especially that you can build it according to your wishes. Have already washed the covers several times (thanks grubby children), no fading or other issues.

We have vimle & klippan, both are great.

IND1A · 17/05/2021 01:11

@CovidCorvid

Does the ektorp come in a few bits.....could I get one home in an estate car?
Ikea have the package sizes on their website.
Asherline · 17/05/2021 01:23

Has anyone got the FRIHETEN?

Susannahmoody · 17/05/2021 01:54

Yup, they're good.

Washing the covers is a pain to do, drying takes a while, BUT we do have the longest IKEA sofa. Also just a bonus that you can remove the covers and wash them.

SkankingMopoke · 17/05/2021 02:13

We took delivery of a GRÖNLID last week, so can't comment on longevity yet. However, it was fairly quick to put together and seems more sturdily constructed that the previous DFS sofa (it still has hardboard, but not so much). The removable covers are a huge bonus, but will be a PITA to get off the ends and backs. My only dislike so far is that it is not cat friendly at all. Our previous sofa lasted 10yrs and remained largely unscathed by the cat, who joined our household around the same time (old sofa was finished off by small children). Within 24hrs of putting it together we had Amazon Primed sticky protectors for the ends and Feliway spray as DCat had already pulled threads. I also forgot when picking the colour that our cat is half white, and the new sofa both grooms out and shows the hairs very effectively. I'm not sure I can blame that on IKEA however... I am planning on buying a spare arm rest cover (or 2) to put away for when we eventually need to replace them due to cat damage.

Poppins2016 · 17/05/2021 02:30

I have a Stocksund sofa and chair (3 years old) and love them. A pp said the covers didn't fit properly but I wonder whether it was a faulty batch... I have two different sets (wash and wear, I change them in spring and autumn) and they've both been fine.

The cushions have sagged a little but I don't mind that (it sort of works with our overall style) and I bought the sofas knowing the cushions were prone to doing that.

Family members have the Ektorp sofas and they've been going strong (with no sagging) for years!

Tomatobear · 17/05/2021 02:48

We bought an Ektorp last year after the Mumsnet hype. It washes really well and the frame is sturdy. The seat cushions are good but the back cushions are total rubbish. They are constantly deformed and deflated! We plan to replace them with a better material soon. I wonder if the quality has gone down over the years.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/05/2021 04:58

That was my experience @Tomatobear. But ours was about 20 years ago, so likely to be how it's always been.

I just assumed daily cushion plumping was the sort of housework most Mumsnetters revel in, me, not so much.

CatsGoPurrrr · 17/05/2021 06:57

I’ve got the Ektorp. Love it. Find it really comfortable and like that the covers can be removed/washed and removed/updated.

BettyUnderswoob · 17/05/2021 07:19

I have two leather sofas from IKEA. I wouldn’t have dared to get a fabric covered one as I have loads of DC, and a dog and they all make such a mess. Theyre still going strong and looking good after 12 years.

Leather is a good alternative to removable covers... you just need to wipe it rather than remove and wash anything!

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 17/05/2021 07:24

I’ve put my EKTORP covers in the tumble dryer with no problems,

DinosApple · 17/05/2021 07:26

Our Ektorps are still going strong after 14 years. We keep talking about replacing them (them going in the conservatory rather than got rid of) but nothing seems to have the longevity we like. We've had two sets of replacement covers, which wash ok. Both were under £100.

Ektorps have a solid base to the seats, they aren't sprung which helps give them a long life.

Providora · 17/05/2021 07:27

We have 2 x and 3 seater Ektorps, used a lot by XL sized people without ever needing any kind of plumping. And I'm definitely the kind of houseproud mumsnetter who plumps things that need it.

purplebagladylovesgin · 17/05/2021 08:19

Our IKEA sofa out lived and out performed our Next sofa. Hands down.

We are now having to replace our expensive Next sofa barely 4 years later, whilst our IKEA sofa looks like it might last decades!

IND1A · 17/05/2021 08:55

I have the pleather Ektorp sofas bought when we had a messy toddler and were expecting another baby. That toddler is now at uni and the sofas are going strong. The only visible wear and tear is a small area on each corner near the floor, you only notice it when you vaccuum.

No wonder they have stopped making them, they are indestructible.

Somuddled · 17/05/2021 09:19

We have had a 2 and 3 seater Ektorp for 7 years now. Originally bought in white then we got a cat and so switched to grey to hide the fluff. I think they are great. I love stripping them off to be washed.

Twilightstarbright · 17/05/2021 09:38

Love our stocksund and washable covers are amazing.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 17/05/2021 09:48

We have a Gronlid sofa and chair here, I love the fact that it is modular and can be built to fit our awkward shaped room

It’s well built and has coped with 2 teens and 2 cats very well, I plan on getting another set of covers at some point purely to be able to change colour when I redecorate

Pearbear · 17/05/2021 10:01

Another very happy Ektorp owner here. 8 years old and still as good as the day I bought it.

Em3978 · 17/05/2021 10:18

Ektorp again here. Had it 15 years next month. We've been needing to replace it for the last year or so, but obvs Ikea isn't easy at the mo. Hmm
I think it'll be Ektorp again!

Embroideredstars · 17/05/2021 10:55

Our cheap.and cheerful Klippans haave served us well over the years.
