I've received an email from eBay saying that they are changing the way I receive my money.
I only have a joint account with DH but when putting in my bank details it's asking me to confirm I'm the sole owner of the account.
I can't find anything on eBay about this issue any advice please on how to get around this please

It’s stupid and I hate it. I’ve been unable to get a sensible answer from EBay.

goldierocks · 16/05/2021 16:11

Hmmm...did you follow a link in an email, or did you log into eBay directly?

Are you absolutely certain that you haven't typed your bank account details into a scam site? Check the URL (address) at the top of the page. It should say www.ebay.co.uk/......

Gouldengirl9 · 16/05/2021 16:14

It was through an email from eBay

I keep getting this email and I've ignored it
It says that ebay are no longer using PayPal and I need to enter my bank details.
But every listing for ebay still states PayPal available so I think it's a scam.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/05/2021 16:17

I hate it. It takes ages to get your money

Hen2018 · 16/05/2021 16:18

It’s not a scam. The old system worked perfectly well.

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 16/05/2021 16:18

I've decided after years and years of selling on eBay (both as a business and my personal account) that they can go and flip off. I used to love selling on there but now all they are interested in are bigger businesses and it's just full of cheap Chinese crap that I can pick up at the local market or seconds and returns from places like Argos. This new system holds your money until eBay decide to pay you. No thanks! Goodbye eBay, it was nice whilst it lasted.

goldierocks · 16/05/2021 16:18

Scammers can fake email addresses unfortunately.

Log directly into your eBay account (not through a link in an email), then click on Messages. If eBay have genuinely sent the email to you, it will appear here.

LlamaGiles · 16/05/2021 16:21

It's probably not a scam as this is something eBay are doing, I'm a regular seller and have had to provide my bank details and am now being paid directly. Personally I hated PayPal so I prefer it.

Passthecake30 · 16/05/2021 16:24

Go onto eBay and look at your email, you will find a link to change your bank account. I’ve been getting the money transferred to me after about 4 days of eBay receiving it, so not too bad. If it’s a joint account, so long as both don’t have to sign for things it should be fine to use?

GivenchyDahhling · 16/05/2021 16:24

It’s definitely not a scam. eBay are moving away from PayPal and trying (at various degrees of encouragement/threat of removal of promos etc) to move everyone over to their own payment system.

The thing about being the sole account holder is a fairly standard line whenever you set up any kind of direct debit/continuous payment authority (although most companies will have something specific for joint accounts) so you will be fine with a joint account. Money is normally “available” one working day after a sale and transfers to your account the day after that (and you’ll receive it depending on speed of payment from the bank’s end). Fees also increase but they’re no worse than the old PayPal fees. The big inconvenience is not having funds immediately like you would with PayPal.

Ninkanink · 16/05/2021 16:26

It’s likely to be legit. However I obviously can’t guarantee it. But it is what eBay is doing now.

I’ve been switched over to payments managed by eBay for about 2, maybe 3, months now and it’s a pain - no more instant payment through PayPal. Instead it takes up to 4 days to come through to my account.

murbblurb · 16/05/2021 16:28

It s true. eBay have split with PayPal and you now have to get paid into your bank account. I've sold a couple of things since and it does work. Extend your delivery times as payment is slower. eBay fees have gone up as there's no PayPal fee.

But...I've also bought a couple of things and paid with PayPal so I'm really not sure what is going on there!

Lamentations · 16/05/2021 16:28

It's not a scam but I did it via eBay rather than use the link in the email as I wasn't sure at first either.

You can use a joint account so long as you are allowed to make sole decisions about transactions, which the vast majority of joint current accounts in the UK allow you to do.

Ninkanink · 16/05/2021 16:30

They’re doing it in a staggered fashion, I believe. So some people will still be using PayPal for the foreseeable future.

TeacupDrama · 16/05/2021 16:38

it is not a scam but go via the ebay message in ebay everyone will have to move to managed payments before as a private seller fees were 10% and paypal 2.9% plus 30p new fees are 12.8% plus 30p so it is a whole 0.1% cheaper
you can choose whether to be paid daily or weekly
you can use your payments to buy postage labels for royyal mail on ebay a small parcel is £3 instead of £3.20 at post office
the name on the account must match the name you run your ebay account so in my case both must be Teacup Drama
this still works if you bank account is actually coffecup and teacup drama
by the end of the year or the autumn everyone will be on managed payments
as a seller it is marginally better as people can only raise disputes via ebay not ebay or paypal
I have both a buisness and private account I choose to be paid weekly as I don't want lots of tiny amounts but if you are only selling 6 items at a time daily is fine, not so much if you have 300 items

AtoZed · 16/05/2021 17:37

It's not cheaper for me as i sell low-value items so used to pay 10% eBay and PayPal 5% + 5p as I had a PayPal micropayments account.

I now pay 12.8% + 30p.

Assuming I sell a pack of hairpins at £2

Sale price: £2.

12.8% + 0.30 = 0.56
postage 0.96
envelope 0.04
Cost to buy 0.20

total 1.76 leaving me with 0.24 profit.

Under the ebay & paypal micropayments I paid

ebay 10%
paypal 5% + 0.05

sale price 2.00

ebay 0.20
paypal 0.15
postage 0.96
envelope 0.04
cost to buy 0.20
total £1.55 leaving profit to me 0.45

So in the theoretical example above, I'm worse off by 21p.
