Best way to give my 5 year old (non-permanent) pink and purple hair?

Dd is obsessed with having pink and purple hair, probably because my neighbours (adult) daughter has baby pink hair and Dd adores her.

I've told her that once she breaks up for Summer holidays we'll sort something out. But what? It obviously has to be non-permanent.

Are hair chalks any good? Dd is quite fair haired, it will start to go lighter in the sun as well. I've also seen some coloured wax on some Facebook ad, but I'm located to buy anything from those ads.

My first thought was food colouring. I would have thought the gel type would work quite well and eventually wash out. Word of warning you do only need a small amount in cakes so go easy with it

ihatemycarseat · 15/05/2021 21:50

I think this will be tricky because if she has very fair hair even semi Permanent will be difficult to get rid of and if she had dark hair semi permanent won't work

Yes. Hair chalks would be best. And they'll just wash out.

You can get wash out spray hair colours from Claire's. It's a bit messy and will gradually brush out during the day and will certainly disappear once washed.

Can’t you do something with tissue paper? I’m sure my niece did it during lockdown...

(Can’t do fancy links, sorry)

The sprays from Claires are great and not too messy if you apply carefully. You could spray them in on a Saturday morning and easily wash out on Sunday before school. I gave my DD pink and blue streaks like Lucy from the Lego Movie with them.

I’ve done my daughters before with high quality tissue paper from Hobbycraft. Soak the tissue in water in a shallow bowl. Lie back and dunk sections of hair in. Allow the dry and dunk remaining sections in another colour. I put abs old pillowcase on her bed but all was well. It lasted a few days.

We did it with tissue paper and it really worked well

Hair chalks are good but are a bit sticky so you have to watch out for tangles. Dd has them and I do it multi coloured sections. It's very easy to do.

I spoke to a hairdresser friend of mine as we've agreed to do the same for my 8yo in the summer. I don't have a problem with hair dye but don't want it to be lingering forever!

She suggested a bit of crazy colour mixed with shampoo for a less bold option that won't last more than a month. I've also seen Arctic Fox dye recommended for kids, I did think about dip dying the ends instead of her whole head.

We have hair chalk but she wants something that lasts more than a day.

idontlikealdi · 15/05/2021 22:19

We used crazy colour in lockdown, lasted around five washes.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 15/05/2021 22:21

I've used the Bleach London colours before, Boots stock it. It's semi-permanent but doesn't last a very long time. Bad for me but good for your DD!

NuffSaidSam · 15/05/2021 22:21

We've used the colour hairsprays you get (I think they were from Poundland), lasted until they washed it out.

I used spray for a charity moonwalk. It worked well and was cheap/easy. But obviously only lasts the dayZ
