Would you eat prawn crackers (Sharwoods) that are 2 months past best before date? They were unopened and smell and taste fine, texture is fine.

Yes, without hesitation Smile

NewjobOldme · 15/05/2021 18:38

I tried one. I think they are fine but DH is wary.

It's a best before so it's quality that may deteriorate. They aren't dangerous

Best before dates you can safely eat after, but they might lose some crispness and flavour. 2 months is a while but if they seem fine I'd still eat them.

Use by dates you need to pay more attention too (although I still use a day or 2 past if whatever it is smells and looks OK!)

DancesWithDaffodils · 15/05/2021 18:43

Yes, tgeyvwill ve fine.
Maybe not as crispy as usual, but unlikely to cause any harm.

Macdo · 15/05/2021 18:44

Surely this is the same as a tube of Pringles or packet of hula hoops? If they're stale don't eat them. If they're still crisp then enjoy.

Although I'm not sure what kind of monster doesn't devour prawn crackers as soon as they're in the house!

I think it's the prawn element that worries him. The ingredients say 18% Prawn. I had assumed it would just be a favouring not an actual ingredient.

...but you don't keep them in a fridge and the crackers have a shelf life of months - years? - what does he think is going to happen? Food poisoning from a crisp?

DappledThings · 15/05/2021 18:54

Yes. I'd be warily checking the first one to see if it had gone soft but otherwise no problem.

dementedpixie · 15/05/2021 18:55

It's cooked dried prawn though not raw prawn

Susie477 · 15/05/2021 18:57

‘Best before’ ≠ ‘Use by’.

I’m always surprised by how many people still don’t understand the difference.

maz210 · 15/05/2021 18:57

Absolutely. I'm probably not the best person to ask though as in the last week I've eaten a Camembert and some smoked bacon that were both four days past their use by date. I'm still alive and not even a dodgy tummy. I tend to go by whether food looks ok and smells ok rather than dates.

bloodywhitecat · 15/05/2021 19:13

The prawns will have been deep fried to within an inch of their lives, it is fine to eat the crackers past their BB date.

ChocOrange1 · 15/05/2021 19:36

Yes I wouldn't even think to check
