Favourite childhood memories.

For those of us lucky enough to have had a happy childhood, why are your favourite memories ?

I was just inspired by a 'favourite plant' gardening thread , which reminded me of being about 7. It was FA cup final day and my dad was watching the match on next door's colour telly (we still had black and white). I decided to help him by digging the veg patch. I managed to put the garden fork straight through my foot and welly boot. I limped into the Neighbours lounge (mud, blood and all), and he had to drive me to casualty, missing the whole match. He still loved me though Grin. Have you ever tried to bandage between a small child's toes? No, neither had the nurse Grin. That was a shambles too.

Simple memory,

What are yours?

I was holding one of my dolls, and just for a split second I genuinely thought she'd come to life - I remember gasping her name before I realised.

This is the story of how I discovered you have a pulse in your thumb...

It was the church fete in the neighbouring village where my dad was the organist. We'd all (except the oldest? maybe she'd aged out) entered the fancy dress competition - the little ones were a caterpillar (not walking yet, could remain sitting) and a butterfly; my two older sisters were an angel and a devil; and I was Mary Mary Quite Contrary, with my beautiful new-to-me long flowery dress and a basket to which my mum had attached some shells, some small dolls and some bell shapes covered in kitchen foil.

My age group were lined up in front of the judge, who was talking to the vicar. I could see him saying "Mary Mary..." so I knew I'd won.

I can think of a few memories of little things.

At my uncle's wedding, I was about aged 6yo, and was a very proud bridesmaid. We were sitting at the top table and had been given a small amount of champagne to toast the bride and groom. Just before they stood up to do a speech a wasp went into my glass. I pointed it out to my new aunt and she promptly put a coaster over the glass to trap the wasp, and called for me to have a new glass served. I was very impressed. Grin

When I was in year 6, I had had a violin exam which had meant I was out all morning as the exam centre was some way away. When I got back, the form was full of "the headmaster wants to see you." They all thought (I think) that I'd skived. So I went with somewhat trembling knees to go and see him-to be told that year R was having a teddy bears' picnic that afternoon and they wanted me to go too (I used to go and listen to readers during lunch time so they knew me, I was the only one in the form that did that). The rest of my form was somewhat indignant to see me out on the field having missed that morning too. Grin

And a really funny one that I still can't tell without laughing.
I was teenage and sitting sunbathing on our back lawn. Df had been trimming the trees back (we had a high hedge round the back garden which needed regular cutting back which was a good 10' high) and was brushing up the leaves. Now df liked golf, but hadn't played for years (too expensive), but he liked to take a club out and practice his swing from time to time. On this occasion, having brushed the leaves, he decided to practice his swing using the brush.
He swung the brush carefully, and shaded his eyes to watch the imaginary ball going straight down the middle towards the hole... just in time to watch the brush end sailing over the hedge into the neighbour's garden.
If that wasn't funny enough he then looked down at the now bare end of the brush handle with an expression of disbelief.
He didn't dare go and ask for the brush head back, so the neighbours must have wondered how this brush head had landed in their back garden.
🤣🤣🤣
