is it ever really warm enough to sit out in your garden where you are at night?

Seeing all these pictures of gardens with lighting and outdoor tables. I'm in the North West and it's probably been warm enough to sit out comfortably - like you would 'in foreign' about 8 times in the 15 years I've lived here.

I'm in London and most of the summer it's warm enough to sit in the garden at night, maybe June to September. Obviously you get the odd day where it's freezing/pouring with rain as well, but mostly warm enough for the garden at night.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/05/2021 15:46

Probably the main reason I live in London Grin

Yes, pretty much June-September (and October can also be lovely)

I think this is the coldest April and may I've ever had - I keep getting Facebook pop ups - 'this is you every year in last 4 years wearing a sun hat/t shirt/sunglasses'

Yes we have spent lots of balmy summer evenings sat outside in our garden. I fell asleep in a hammock one night after a particularly good party 🤪 we’re in the south east (Surrey countryside)

Bluntness100 · 14/05/2021 15:46

Yes, in the south east, plenty throughout the summer and if it’s chilly we can light a fire. In fact we sat out there till the wee small hours last weekend with some friends, but we had a fire going and we also have a wooden gazebo area.

I already have my coffee out there every morning. I just shove a jacket on. It’s not been warm enough for dinner yet, but by June it normally is, and most days till sept, maybe even Oct.

BashfulClam · 14/05/2021 16:54

Ha ha I’m in Scotland…no

DinosApple · 14/05/2021 16:55

We're in Suffolk in the countryside (makes a difference) and it's definitely too chilly unless it's high summer, or we have a fire pit.
Plus I don't appreciate being bitten so I don't do it much.

Dauphinois · 14/05/2021 17:50

Here in the midlands you definitely need a fire pit, bar the odd exceptionally warm night.

QueryA · 15/05/2021 09:46

I’m Scottish east coast and as soon as it’s dark -even in the height of ‘summer’ - it’s too cold to sit out. You end up huddled in a chair or standing stamping your feet and it’s only when you come inside you realise you were so chilled and tense you were actually in pain!
It does make me want to move south!

badlydrawnbear · 15/05/2021 09:51

I am in the Midlands, and, no, not unless there is a heat wave. I do remember some summers where 10pm was the only time it was cool enough to comfortably sit out in the garden because it was so hot the rest of the day but this would be about 2 nights a year on average.

MonkeyNotOrgangrinder · 15/05/2021 09:57

Yes, in the North West but in a South facing sheltered sun trap garden 🌞

SoddingWeddings · 15/05/2021 09:59

We're in Cornwall, so we're outside most nights in summer, yes.

FleetwoodRaincoat · 15/05/2021 10:03

Yes, we sit out loads in the summer. Last year we probably sat out 3 or 4 times a week, as the weather was so nice.

Generally it seems to be the wind that prevents us sitting outside, rather than it being too cold.

Really wouldn't recommend a fire pit, unless you want everything to smell of bonfire.

waterlego · 15/05/2021 10:04

I’m on the South coast and we sit in the garden or on the beach late into summer nights but still mostly cool enough to be able to sleep. It’s one of the main reasons I wouldn’t want to move anywhere else.

wotchhha · 15/05/2021 10:04

Yes but not yet

Titsywoo · 15/05/2021 10:08

I'm in the south east and I'd say in the last few years that through most of the summer it is too cold outside as soon as it gets dark. Maybe if there is 30+ degree heatwave there is an exception. I'm sure when I was younger that wasn't the case. I used to sit up till 3/4/5am with friends after a bbq but maybe we were all so pissed we couldn't feel the cold?

hartof · 15/05/2021 10:13

8 times in 15 years? I live in the northwest the last two summers have been lovely and we sat out most nights.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 15/05/2021 10:15

SE here too - yes it is often warm enough; that said you would want a jumper once the sun is fully down. It's not uncomfortable though. That heatwave the other year, wasn't the day/night range only about 10 degrees or something stupid?

It's cold this year though... we've regressed about 30 years I'd say in terms of bluebells! They always used to be around mid-May when I was a child but for ages have been over within April. Still going strong though in by 2021! The recent rain has been a saviour to an extent... I was worried the drought might affect things.
