Posting here for traffic, can my employer claim back a signing on bonus if I leave?

Employer has proposed a significant bonus if I sign on to full time employment after a training scheme with them. The catch is that I cannot leave the company for x amount of years or I will have to pay the bonus back.

If I were to choose to leave would they legally be able to claim that money back? So as not to drip feed they have major issues with staff retention after the training period because they are absolutely AWFUL to work for.

Yes, they could sue you as I understand it, if you've signed a contract to that effect.

Think so, yes. It’s normal for bonuses after training scheme in my sector and I believe they tend to take money back from final pay after notice has been given, and then whether they pursue you for the balance depends on the value remaining.

Yes they can.

Yes, that's what contracts are for. Some companies may choose not to persue it but they absolutely can.

Of course, if you agree to it and sign the contract of course they can legally go after you and take it back.
