Toddler bed - dangerous against the wall?

Trigger warning - infant death.

I recently saw this article on social media about a 2 year old who suffocated after becoming wedged between his bed and wall and being unable to free himself. Maybe there's more to the story we don't know but my 19 month old is still in a cot but would naturally have just put his toddler bed against the wall. One poster advises to either have the bed at least 30cm away from the wall of have a rail on both sides of the bed to help prevent this.

I had no idea there would be a risk as you assume as the bed is against the wall they'd be safe. What does anyone else do as I assumed bed against the wall was pretty standard but now I'm anxious about it for when we do move her into a bed? Thanks

Sorry it won't let me add the photos of the article.

Christ that so heartbreaking.

However, my children’s beds have always been against a wall. No choice really in a box room. There would be little alternative, apart form just a mattress on the floor.

My toddlers always slept in beds against the wall. Like above, there was no choice in a small bedroom.

I think it's important to remember suffocation in a gap between bed and wall is incredibly rare. Some precautions you can take are ; ensure the bed is heavy enough not to move away from the wall, remove wheels on feet, have a correctly flitting mattress for the bed base, fit a side guard on wall side, or of course position the bed in the centre of the room if possible.
