Wayleave agreement

Anyone had this?
I filled in a generic form that I received in the post about 6 months ago for a legal company to see if I was entitled to a payment.
I have now received the legal document that there is a cable belonging to SSE across my front garden and I am due a compensation payment of 150 minus 20% for the fees of the legal company.
Does anyone have experience of this? It just seems like money for nothing as the cable is there anyway!

I would check whether it is actually money for nothing. What happens if there is a problem with the cable? Would they be able to dig up your garden without offering any compensation due to having made the payment? Are you able to claim the payment directly without paying the legal company a percentage?

You can apply for payment directly from the utility company yourself. I've not done it because I haven't found out exactly what rights or permissions I'd be signing away. Lots of others in my community have taken the money anyway.

I get wayleave payments every year for work. It literally is free money, because X utility company has a cable or aerial or something on your land.

It states that the 150 is payment for the next 15 years. So can I claim money for the last 7 years that I have owed the house?
Thanks all for your input.

Yes, this is a genuine thing.

JustPootlingAlong · 14/05/2021 13:04

Yes I have claimed 2 wayleave payments for transformers on my land in my current and previous house. You don't need to use this company, you can claim directly from the energy supplier and get all of the money. It a a genuine thing. There is a limit on backdating the payments (some don't even do back payments) so I don't think you will get the last 7 years worth.

Nameisjustaname · 14/05/2021 15:25

Thanks all.
I will have to look into how difficult it is to claim directly from the energy company
Thanks again.

Yes but you shouldn't have used the "legal"company I got the same letter but I contacted SSE directly and they send a cheque yearly. No need for a middle man to take a chunk of my money!

Thanks all. I will have to look into how difficult it is to claim directly from the energy company Thanks again.
It's not difficult at all

Oh and it's also worth noting that its not just a one way thing for you getting free money. You are agreeing for them to come onto your land, carry out repairs, cut down trees, dig up ground work etc if required/if there's faults.
Just so you are aware.
