Year 6 pupil at primary , on the transition day visit to their secondary school who is responsible for the child’s care ?
The primary school as they are still legally a pupil there ?
The secondary as they are on their premises ?
The parents as it’s somewhere in between ?
Tia

I would say the secondary school for the period of the visit. I would say primary for the journey to and from, if originated at primary.

IANAL.

Crockof · 13/05/2021 17:49

Responsible, all three. Duty of care the secondary school. Intrigued

Additional needs but I wasn’t sure on that one day who it falls to as technically still a primary pupil

Do you think something is going to go wrong? In what terms do you mean 'legally responsible' for whose actions?

W00t · 13/05/2021 17:57

Whilst visiting Y6 are on our premises, we're responsible for them...but if there was a behaviour issue, we'd be contacting the primary (not likely to contact parents unless it was something major, which I cannot see happening) as they need to know/discipline on return to school. We haven't been told transition days can go ahead yet though...

Secondary school

Stichintime · 13/05/2021 18:00

Some children with special needs went with a TA from their primary school. The secondary school would be legally responsible once they had registered the children in the morning, until they are dismissed, either with permission to leave alone or into the care of another adult.

Onceuponatime1818 · 13/05/2021 18:00

If they have 1-1 at primary school could that person go with them for the day?

Soontobe60 · 13/05/2021 18:01

Where we have had children with additional needs visiting their secondary school for a transition session, we have sent a TA with them if we thought it would be needed, and completed a risk assessment which we send to the secondary school Senco and transition teacher.

We were given a date a couple of weeks ago for it, I just couldn’t seem to find out who was responsible current school or secondary They go in from home not school so we drop off and pick up but it was just the day I was unsure who we are meant to arrange the care with (medical needs)

I will ask but I wasn’t sure if it was classed as a normal school day that the primary would be responsible for

Thankyou that’s really helpful

Ds primary school 1-1 will be going with him visits because she is trained in his medical needs and the secondary school aren’t yet.

Howshouldibehave · 13/05/2021 18:05

If it’s medical needs, who at the primary oversees that? Senco? Class teacher? Welfare lead? Email them and ask them the plan. They might well put you in contact with the equivalent person in the secondary school.

W00t · 13/05/2021 22:11

For a medical need then I'd expect the Senco to contact you directly. However, the secondary school would only know of that need if there is an ehcp or primary have told them, and we haven't had any information from primaries yet (and the date our LA set is after the transition day, so that's helpful Hmm). I would contact the new school directly and ask senco to liaise with you about transition- that way you know they can support.
