How many towels do you wash at once ?

I've just got my washing machine repaired. The bearings had gone and considering it was only a year old I think it must be the towels and bath mats that damaged it so quickly.

I'm a bit scared to put them in. Also because the full load programmes take 3 hours. So I generally wash on the 1 hour mixed which is only 3.5 kg so half the full load of 7kg. Mines a small machine compared to a lot.

I wash my towels and bath mats once a week generally. Maybe I should only put in one big bath sheet and a hand towel, but will take me a week to get everything done.

I had a Bosch washer dryer 8 kg load ( cost approx £600 ) Used to ram it full of towels, 1400 spin & dry for 6 years solid. Loved that machine. Moved house & took it & it finally caved after 3 weeks at new house. It had just over 6 years of being used regularly like 4/5 times a week with heavy loads. Didn't attempt to get it fixed, decided I would rather put the £ towards a new one.

My new washer is of similar quality. I think you get what you pay for with washer/dryer appliances.

Two bath sheets 2 hand towels. I do the bath mat every couple of weeks with the tea towels. My machine is 9k.

aiwblam · 13/05/2021 19:31

3 or the machine bangs very badly.

woodhill · 13/05/2021 19:35

I have a large drum but still tend to do only 2 bath sheets with some hand towels

I've often wondered if I could wash more

CadburyCake · 13/05/2021 19:37

4 bath towels and some washcloths usually, in a 9kg machine. Bath mat is done separately as on a lower temperature due to rubber backing. General rule is drum 2/3 full.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 13/05/2021 20:51

i use one bath sheet with other washing

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 13/05/2021 21:07

I bought those bobbly quick dry bath mats and only use them now as they are lighter and don't unbalance the machine, I did have a previous machine which refused to spin if stuff like heavy bath mats were in it.

I just fill the machine leaving a small gap at the top, if it is only half full with heavy stuff like towels it can be even more unbalanced than when full.

imgoingtoregretthis · 13/05/2021 21:51

@MadMadMadamMim

Blimey, it never occurred to me there was a weight limit. I mean, I know they put this stuff in instructions, but 7kg or whatever means fuck all to me.

I just fill the machine with a wash load. Probably 6 or 7 bath towels. Leaving a bit of space on top for water to swirl round.

I have lived as a grown up since 1983, clearly without ever really understanding how to work domestic appliances correctly.

It's worse if you read the instructions which I only did once it broke down you'll see each programme has a different weight amount, most not as high as whatever the size of your machine. Not that anyone can guess washings weight by looking at it anyway.

Not sure what kg mine is, just standard I think.

I would put two bath sheets and a hand towel in together.

I would only put one bath mat in with a bath sheet as bath mats really retain the water and are so heavy when wet.

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2021 22:09

I normally do bath mats one at a time with some light weight items . My washing machine is quite temperamental (particular if you are in a rush so it drags the last minute for hours).

LemonRoses · 13/05/2021 22:16

We send bed linen and towels to the laundry. IT means our washing machine has lasted for about twenty years.

onecandream · 13/05/2021 22:30

7kg machine: two bath sheets and a bath mat together.

onepieceoflollipop · 13/05/2021 22:41

I have previously weighed washing and was surprised by how much you can officially put in a load
In my 8kg machine I regularly put 2 each of bath sheets and bath towels. About 4-6 hand/hair towels and 1 heavy bath mat. Plus a few flannels/random pants etc
It’s dry weight not wet weight

How many towels do you wash at once ?
onepieceoflollipop · 13/05/2021 22:44

Bath sheet is approx 1kg
Some of you seem to be underfilling the machine -
That’s not a judgement just an observation.
It also explains I think why some people do a lot of loads
I do approx 6 per week for 4 of us but mostly full loads

AnExcellentWalker · 13/05/2021 22:48

We have a 7kg, usually wash 2 normal bath towels (not bath sheets) & a hand towel. Or a double duvet, sheet & 4 pillow cases. If I wash a pillow or bath robe, it goes in on its own. We're always careful not to overload the machine, usually split an over large load rather than shove it all in. The bearings on our previous machine died mid cycle & we had to pump it out & rinse everything in the bath, not fun.

redandwhite1 · 13/05/2021 22:58

Eek

I do 2 massive towels, 1 small, 2 hand towels and a bath mat

It's a 7kg machine but I bet it weighs more

Might start halving it as no way can I fit even a finger in let alone a hand

Oh if it's dry then I might be ok

Always thought the weight was wet!!

Girlonthego · 13/05/2021 23:03

I'm with you OP. Sounds like we have the same machine! Cotton 20/40/60/90 dregrees are all 3 hours so we do mixed load at 1 hour.

Tbh, like pp, I just ran in as much as I can.

PattyPan · 13/05/2021 23:12

Up to 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and a bath mat and then whatever other washing of the same colour but I was searching for tips today on how to make towels come out softer (we don’t have a tumble dryer) and the advice seemed to be to put fewer in at once so they could bounce around more which would fluff them up like the TD does so I might try smaller loads. I’ve got a 7kg machine too.

BeautyQueenIamNot · 14/05/2021 00:23

8kg machine (I think - I’ve not looked)

2 x big bath sheets 2 x bath towels and 2 x hand towels and maybe some tea towels as well

Theoldwoman · 14/05/2021 03:48

I have a 9kg machine and we go through alot of towels.

For one load, I usually do all the white towels, 1 for me, 1 for DH, 1 bathmat and a few flannels.
