How long to change jobs internally NHS?

What needs to be done between conditional and unconditional offer if transferring internally? Same hospital? Band 3 to Band 4 if relevant

2 weeks to 2 months (observations)

Stompythedinosaur · 13/05/2021 18:32

Much longer than you expect, in my experience. All my role changes have taken between 3-5 months from being appointed to my first day in the new post.

deadrave · 13/05/2021 18:35

Around 4 weeks plus notice period I would say on average.

Depends if within one department or moving departments. Can be very quick if same manager and happy for employee to move into new position. However if moving between depts/to new team, current manager can make you serve full notice before moving over. Also depends on whether you are required to do HR checks all over again. I have seen both instances occur

I have had both ends of the spectrum recently. B3 to B4 same team, interviewed Wednesday, cleared by Friday and started as B4 following Monday. Meet recently recruited to B3 post and offered to 2 X part timers. External applicant starts on Monday with full clearance and internal applicant was only given permission to hand in her months notice this week! No rhyme or reason as I am a manager who chases HR every few days and still it will sometimes just get stuck. It is worthy asking HR what they are waiting for as you may need to chase something. They asked ward manager for an internal reference this time which has not happened before. Also be aware that at the point that everything is fine, someone in HR still had to do a final check of everything before emailing recruiter to say you can set a start date. In my experience, a phonecall to nudge this but along is helpful.

Thanks. Do you know what pre employment checks are done if you're internal? Will it just be my newest reference? Or will everything be done again?

From acceptance of new position to starting the role was exactly 12 weeks for me. I was staying in the same trust but moving to a new team/band and my manager made me serve my 8 weeks notice

Stompythedinosaur · 13/05/2021 22:47

Everything is done again in my Trust.

JamesMcavoysforearms · 13/05/2021 23:17

Ime between 6-8 weeks depends on whether your manager will let you go before the end of your notice period. It's easier to move within the same department. I got a secondment and that took 2 weeks. My Trust are actually pretty quick.

ThePontiacBandit · 13/05/2021 23:31

I’ve had wildly different timelines (band 5). First time - I was offered the job in August, started new post in January! Had to go through HR process, occ health review then work 8 weeks notice. Second time it was agreed I would transfer (wasn’t getting on well in my role). I moved within 2 weeks! Depends on your trust and how they approach it.

I think they said the DBS head to be within last 2 years or would have been redone. Only reference needed was ward manager. The delay was some Covid form that applicant has sent back but HR not received so had to do again. That is why it is worth asking HR what is outstanding. An internal transfer should only take about a week plus your notice period really.
