Misconceptions around your job or working hours...

Inspired by the going back to work after maternity leave thread, I had something like this when I worked nights, friends who used to assume that I would be free in the day to meet up/ go shopping /babysit ect. Er, no I'll be asleep!
My present job is live in week on / off. So 168 hours - can sleep( obviously) but always on call & do get disturbed nightly. Pay is good & what I signed up for. But because of the week " off" ( after travel time) some people have made comments about me being part time Hmm.
What strange opinions have you heard about your own job/ working hours have you heard ?

Work in HR, a friend recently said she would quite like to do my job as it seems nice just ‘writing policies and letters and stuff’. I’m head of the department Confused

I work 80% but 5 days, finishing at 3pm, it says so in my email status but no-one ever notice and gets huffy when I don't accept meeting requests after 3pm, working from home has made this worse

That as I am self employed I am available whenever I feel like or for people to turn up on my doorstep unannounced for a cuppa 🙄. Oh and that I cannot possibly work seven days a week during peak shopping season (Christmas).

MIL described chartered Librarian SIL as , ‘ she stamps the books in the Library’!
When my DIL got her degree in Design MIL said, ‘ she can always teach craft if she can’t get a job’!

EL8888 · 13/05/2021 15:04

@Piepinkie l remember reading some research about being a librarian being a high stress occupation. Partly because of other people’s perceptions being it’s a load of doss and reading books basically! My auntie was a librarian so l know it’s very different

EL8888 · 13/05/2021 15:07

@Beebumble2 how did your MIL earn a crust? My ex-MIL used to look down on me being a qualified nurse. Apparently being a nurse is low class. For clarity she wasn’t a high flyer herself, she worked in a factory and then gave up work. Not that there’s anything wrong with working in a factory but she acted like she was a QC or brain surgeon, looking down on everyone’s “little jobs”.

Beebumble2 · 13/05/2021 15:12

EL8888 no she had to give up her training as a nurse when young, due to contracting an illness. It did leave her somewhat bitter, we all made allowances for her. Sometimes through gritted teeth!

That instrumental teaching is a job- think this might be just my in-laws though...
'I called at 7'
'Yes but I was working so couldn't answer'
'Oh what job are you doing?'
'The same one I've been doing for the last decade'
Next evening....
'I called about that thing we discussed but you didn't answer'
'Yes you know I work evenings'.... on and on
They do this in reverse to dh ....
'I won't call on Saturday as he'll be at work'
'No he doesn't work Saturdays' (always had standard office hours)

I work in local government. Read many a FB type post over lock down about us being at home, with our trotters up. Truth is our workload increased massively, a lot if staff volunteered evenings and weekends on top of their usual FT hours for emergency responses, and I don't know a single colleague who was furloughed. We are lucky to be employed but no trotters were up.

I'm a vicar
Apparently we only work Sundays Hmm

BlueThursday · 13/05/2021 21:27

Because I work in a bank I get paid massive bonuses.

Certainly not the case, nor have we had a pay rise in a good while

I happened to see my (former) vicar's face when a local man asked her what her 'day job' was. It was a sight to behold.
