What’s the easiest and least self-sacrificing way of shifting a few lockdown kilos?

I’ve never had to intentionally lose weight before ( that’s in part to twenty years of Chron’s disease which is thankfully in remission ). But lockdown and encroaching middle age have not been kind and I’ve gone from looking comfy and slim in my size 12 dresses to looking like someone poured me in and forgot to say ‘when’. I’m not a bad eater, never really binge but am no stranger to either the cheese aisle or the wine rack.

I am trying to swim 3 times a week, cut down on the wine and visits to the biscuit cupboard. But it’s not really shifting. Ideally I’d like to get rid of 3 kilos, even more ideally one from each bum cheek and one from my tum.

Any ideas on how to shift bit of weight without feeling constantly hungry, or worse still, hangry?

Track calories in and calories out and make sure it’s a deficit.

SunshineCake · 12/05/2021 19:33

Running and IF is working for me.

FrontRowSeat · 12/05/2021 19:34

Switch to skimmed milk. Quick win.

Vinto · 12/05/2021 19:37

Stop the wine? Easier said than done I know.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/05/2021 19:37

Increase exercise, portion control and no biscuit cupboard.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 12/05/2021 19:38

Lower your cabs and try fasting.

We haven't ordered food shopping in a few weeks dh has gone to Lidl for meal ingredients and that's it. I have vaguely wandered into the kitchen a few times a day looking for snacky bits but most of the time have vaguely wandered out again when there wasn't anything obvious. I've lost 3 kg this last few weeks and only realised today that the minimal food shopping and my jeans being loose are completely linked Grin

Replace booze with flavoured low calorie water/cup of herbal tea.

delilahbucket · 12/05/2021 19:44

More protein less carbs to keep you feeling fuller for longer. No wine, switch to spirits and a low calorie mixer, but really no alcohol at all is better for your blood sugars.

ThreeCharacters · 12/05/2021 19:56

Stop the biscuits and replace wine with gin and low calories tonic.

Jade308 · 12/05/2021 19:56

I'm not liking the badly stuffed sausage look on myself either.

Just don't eat shit.

Jongleurterre · 12/05/2021 19:58

No alcohol, reduce portion size and exercise more.

Labradabradorable · 12/05/2021 20:18

Oh God, I knew it would involve less wine. So sad. I’ll give it a go.

I’m going to try skipping breakfast in . I Know it sounds counterintuitive, but when I do I feel I have much more energy and am mentally sharper.

Less calories than you use...
Using mfp to track every mouthful...
I have lost 3.5 kgs in 3 weeks. I wasn't a bad eater either.. But menopause and too much booze gave me middle tyres and back fat.
Yes there are hunger pangs now and again but I just say to myself that the next meal will be nice and I can wait.
We seem terrified at the concept of being a bit hungry

Natsku · 12/05/2021 20:30

Intermittent fasting. It sounds like quite a sacrifice but after about a week you stop feeling hungry in the mornings anyway. Might be a bit harder to start the fast in the evening if you're an evening snacker and wine drinking but start by stopping eating and drinking anything with calories (I drink fizzy water and herbal tea in the evenings) an hour earlier than you normally would and then increase.

whippitwoowoo · 12/05/2021 20:38

I’m
Doing 16:8 plus 1300 cals a day to shift a stone.
It’s making me eat much more healthily.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/05/2021 20:47

The idea of not having breakfast is horrific for me, I wake up starving, have a swim first thing and need a substantial snack midmorning and don't really feel full till I've had lunch. But in the afternoon I only snack from boredom so have low calorie snacks like fruit and veg. I like to have tea reasonably early and then brush my teeth so no evening snacking.

Goldenphoenix · 12/05/2021 20:51

Intermittent fasting! I fast for 16 hours, eat whatever I like for 8. It's brilliant and isn't much of a sacrifice once you are in the routine. The hardest part for me was not drinking tea with milk in the evening/when I wake up. But I now drink green tea instead and have got used to it.

Tangledtresses · 12/05/2021 20:52

Fasting 18 hours and low carb
You can still drink 😀

Labradabradorable · 12/05/2021 20:52

Brushing teeth after my evening meal has worked well for me too. I did used to like a glass of milk and a biscuit on the sofa while watching TV, but I figured that's an easy way of dropping a few calories without feeling too hungry.

I reckon I could go for intermittent fasting, except the not drinking tea in the morning. Maybe just a little cup of tea (and one of coffee) with skimmed milk. My mum switched to skimmed milk a little while ago as she drinks loads of tea (she's also very slim and always has been, I have my father's rear end!)

I got a calorie counting app - it tells you exactly how much calories are in your portion - and it has most of the products sold in the supermarket so it is easy to use - you just weigh the amount you are eating and it works out the calories

I was shocked how many calories were in small portions of things I often ate. Also i found a few rare things that were tasty but low calorie - like roasted tomatoes with Uncle Bens Spicy Rice.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 12/05/2021 21:00

I rarely eat breakfast, and I occasionally skip lunch. Mostly I listen to my body and eat when hungry. I've lost about 18lb since last March without actually trying.

DH has decided to lose weight by avoiding alcohol, and eating mostly salad and lean protein. It's working really well. He's also lost about 18lb this year.

Seems like you just need to find what works for you.

DorisLessingsCat · 12/05/2021 21:07

How old are you? Once I hit 40 I had to make serious efforts to shift the lbs.

PermanentTemporary · 12/05/2021 21:10

Myfitnesspal and replace carbs with a bed of spinach leaves.

I personally find a daily litre of orange squash oddly helpful. If I'm not thirsty, I can't misinterpret it as hunger. And it's just enough calories to knock the edge off hunger.
