What are the BRILLIANT things about being a child or parent right now?

I'm having a bit of a blue day about the state of the world my children are growing up in and my ability to parent them through it. They are young (under 5) and are great, but their sheer, perfect innocence is breathtaking. I don't feel equipped to help them navigate the social, economic, technological and political issues of the world today as well as learning to read and write!

All I can think of are negative things facing them; social media, the overuse of porn, male on female violence, political uncertainty, long term effects of covid, environmental change, a general feeling like people don't really care about one another in the way I used to think they did. It's hard to explain, my youth (90/00s) just seems so easy in comparison!

Can anyone tell me some wonderful things about their future? If you have older kids are they experiencing great things? Or am I right to think the world is utterly fucked for them?

Good free health care in the UK

My thoughts...
Our medical care (NHS) is pretty amazing- especially when compared to other countries.
Most teachers are much nicer and better teachers than when I was at school. ( 1980's)
There's much more awareness and understanding of mental health problems and my teens talk to their friends more openly about these issues.
SEN issues are more understood and recognised in society than they used to be... although it's still a slog at times to get the help needed.
Working conditions in many jobs have improved in my lifetime- health and safety didn't really exist in 1970's.
Diversity of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation is more accepted than it used to be although we still have a way to go.

Sex and relationships education is compulsory in schools now. Being technologically literate from a younger age. Better safeguarding. Smoking is now incredibly unpopular.

There was no one in the park today (except DDs and I) so I got to climb the massive wooden climbing frame/tree house and come down the really tall twirly slide. Just to show DDs how it's done obviously Wink

I’d really say that there have ALWAYS been problems in the world, but when you’re young you never really know about them. Rose tinted specs innit.

There was an actual war within our parents generation. Women’s rights were a much bigger issue. Grooming, sexual harassment was more prolific. Recessions. No holidays abroad / lack of world view.

Thanks for all the replies. There are a lot of things to be grateful for. I am generally quite an optimistic person, and I read a lot about history and spend much of thinking 'thank god I wasn't alive then'. I don't know why it got to me today.

Although I do think that women's rights area massive issue at the moment but in different ways from in the past.
