What is your laundry routine?

Theoldwoman · 12/05/2021 14:17

Was watching something on YT a few days ago, and it got me thinking about how others do their laundry.

Please share if you like!

Do you have a routine? Do you wash certain items on certain days?
Do you sort?
Hot wash or cold?
Line dry or tumble dry?

Do you have a favourite detergent?

I wash DDs' clothes at the weekend as they need clean uniform for Mondays. Ours on a Monday or Tuesday. Bedding at the weekend, a bed a week. Ish. Towels with our stuff, chucking in tea towels with the girls stuff at the weekend.

LettyLoman · 12/05/2021 16:55

no routine

wash one lot of whites on weekend,
wash towels and bedlinen through week
wash colours throughout week BUT I will wait until end of day for school uniform bits.

and because I like to shock people I'm just going to mention that I NEVER use fabric softener for anything and I never put a machine on unless it full.

onemouseplace · 12/05/2021 16:57

I tend to wash our bed linen on Wednesdays and towels on Fridays. And do a dark wash every other day. Everything else gets done when I have the relevant full load.

One load a day.

I have a to do app with things on rotations (i.e. sheets once a week) and put on whatever I think is the priority.

Works for me.

Dalmxo · 12/05/2021 17:01

I do towels and bedding separately on a Tuesday, tumble towels and line dry sheets when I can.

Wednesday I do a load of either whites, darks or colours - line dry when possible or airer

Saturday 1-2 loads of either of the above.

Once a month near end of month I will wash all contents of laundry basket to clear down.

The above gives me some variation with what we wear and keeps us ticking along well.

I try and iron every 7-14 days

RoseZinfandel · 12/05/2021 17:02

I start on Friday evening and try to do 4 or 5 loads by Saturday afternoon, then that's it for the week apart from sports kit as and when.

Sort by colour, 60 degree wash for whites, 40 for the others.

I always use powder rather than liquid, I like Tesco own brand. No fabric conditioner.

Time the white wash so I can iron the school shirts damp from the machine.

DiscustinHunAmFummin · 12/05/2021 17:05

Wash clothes.

Dry clothes.

Dump basket on my bed with full intent to sort. (There is no space anywhere else)

Get unavoidably distracted by the toddler or the 7 year old.

Come to bed far to late and move clothes back to the basket or the corner of the room.

Repeat

Repeat

Repeat

Rewash most of them that have fallen on the floor, got mixed with dirty clothes or found the way back to the washing bin.

Repeat from the beginning.

🤦‍♀️ I wish I was joking.

minipie · 12/05/2021 17:08

Monday all bedlinen wash and dry. Fold if i get time
Tuesday wash darks and dry. Wash lights and dry if time, or if not then do lights on Weds. Fold bedlinen if not done on Mon
Tues or Weds eve fold all clothes
Weds or Thurs put away
Sat wash and dry towels
Delicates maybe every 3-4 weeks when basket is fairly full

Towels and bedlinen at 60
(Occasionally towels at 90 so it also serves as a tub clean)
Clothes at 40
Delicates at 20

Laundry is pre sorted, as we have 3 laundry baskets lights darks and delicates

Washing machine takes 11kg which helps keep number of loads right down

MoesBar · 12/05/2021 17:10

TOMM - one load a day.

I split mine and the DCs up, it’s just easier for me.

My cleaner changes/launders our bedding. I love her.

Thirtyrock39 · 12/05/2021 17:11

Wash on every morning before work- coloureds or lights- laundry once a fortnight and stick on line as soon as home most of the year- on days like today it's dry in a couple of hours but in winter it's tumble dried
There was a good laundry guru article in the times a few Saturdays ago saying everything should go in a short cool wash and not to use fabric conditioner and we wash things far to much so I'm trying to wear things longer such as T-shirts jeans hoodies etc Also that the water is the main cleaner rather than detergent so I'm trying to use less detergent and do cooler quicker washes but as nhs my uniform has to be 60 degree washes and I struggle to wash lower than 40 for other things but I'm a bit more germ phobic with covid so when there's school uniform going in it's always a quick 40 wash :
Ironing is all done on a Sunday but everything else I try and wash dry and put away one load a day (this is a bit of organised mum method rules )

Thirtyrock39 · 12/05/2021 17:13

Laundry once a fortnight should say bedding laundry ! I wish it was once a fortnight
Just to add this year I had three weeks without a working washing machine and I did love getting a service wash twice a week for everything - expensive and a pain going to laundrette but saved me loads of time day to day

Brown76 · 12/05/2021 17:31

No because I share the washing job with another adult who won’t follow my routine, but if it were up to me I’d do a wash and put away every evening, dry every morning, a whites wash on Fridays for end of the school week and a towels/bedding hot wash each weekend. What we actually do is keep two laundry bags that we chuck everything in, and decant from them most days on a 40 warm wash everything altogether (clothes, towels, tea towels) supermarket non bio, we always use the same cycle.

Faranth · 12/05/2021 17:40

I've always been a bit haphazard with laundry, it easily gets out of hand if the weather is bad (no tumble dryer) and I end up with piles of it everywhere.

But recently I bought one of these that was recommended on a similar thread - it's awesome! I sort into DDs clothes, darks, lights, DPs grubby work stuff. When the bag is full, that's a full load so I never end up with half loads and a red sock in with the whites or whatever. Honestly, it all just feels a bit more under control and I'm not side eyeing an overflowing basket while it pisses down outside.

If it looks like the weather is going to be shite for a few days I can tell at a glance if I've got an almost full load that I can shove in before it rains or if I've got plenty of time before I'll need to do a load.

What is your laundry routine?
cookiecreampie · 12/05/2021 18:14

I do about 2 or 3 washes a day. I don't have a routine, just do a wash when there's enough to go in, which there always is and wash whites separately.

Bananalanacake · 12/05/2021 18:16

Wait until the baskets are very full and do 3 loads on one day, white, dark, 60 degrees. Hang outside, I strongly disagree with tumble dryers, big waste of electricity. This happens once every 10 days, clothes are worn more than once apart from underwear. 2 adults 2 DC, in Germany so no worries about uniform.

IhaveMyMoments · 12/05/2021 18:24

Around 3 loads a day. Plus bedding towels etc
Whites
Darks
Pinks /purples
Blues and greys
Yellows.

I'm terrible.
Heat depending on the items
Tumble towels and bedding if raining
Tumble pj's
Everything else on airer or line dried.

IhaveMyMoments · 12/05/2021 18:25

Also sunny days makes me search for laundry.. As hate seeing an empty line.

HowsYourHeadHun · 12/05/2021 18:25

No set days as such.
Don't have a garden so can't hang out washing Sad and don't own a tumble dryer so has to go on airers.

I like to keep on top of washing though as darks always seem to build up very quickly.

Once it's dried it gets folded and put away.

HowsYourHeadHun · 12/05/2021 18:29

Forgot to say beddings/mattress protectors go on a hot wash every weekend. Same with towels and shower curtain and bath mat and flannels.

Pillows and duvets washed once a month.

Coats get washed when the seasons change but DS's puddle suits and rain jacket go in more regularly as they're muddy.

RampantIvy · 12/05/2021 18:42

Do you have a routine? No
Do you wash certain items on certain days? No
Do you sort? Yes
Hot wash or cold? 40 degrees for colours, 60 degrees for whites, bedding and towels
Line dry or tumble dry? line if dry, tumble if wet

Two adults here, but we both work messy/dirty jobs plus we have animals so that adds to the load.

Wednesday = dog blankets.
Friday = bed sheets.
Saturday = towels.

Otherwise, things get one as and when needed, I probably do six loads a week on average including the above. One coloured, one whites, and one for DH's work stuff as that needs a separate hot wash. Oh, and DH probably does another for his gym/biking kit on a Sunday.

Theoldwoman · 13/05/2021 02:54

Thanks for all the replies!

Interesting reading (well to me anyway)
Seems most use fabric conditioner? I have a new washing machine and was advised to use it occasionally, but I do like the smell!!!

BritInAus · 13/05/2021 04:54

No routine/rules at all. I do a load most days. Towels tend to get done after swimming lesson/as they need it during the week. Bedding probably every 2 weeks or more often if needed.

Don't sort colours or types of item (I chuck towels/clothes/bedding in together) air dry everything (don't have a dryer, and live in a good climate with undercover washing line in carport), put stuff away when I get to it, iron when I have a basketful/really need a certain item, about once a month in front of the tv.

Eileen101 · 13/05/2021 06:15

I alternate between darks and nappies each day, so both are done every other day. Whites every 3 or so days or the kids run out of vests. Towels and bedding at the weekend depending on how busy we are. Wool wash on a Monday.

Ordinarily I wash everything at 30, except nappies, towels and sheets which are 60. If the kids clothes are covered in mud/wee/grass stains/spaghetti sauce etc, I'll bump it up to 40.
We use powder detergent and fabric softener for clothes. We don't have a tumble dryer so washing goes on the line, outside or the airer in our attic room with a dehumidifier if it can't go outside.
