Please help me decide whether to get a double or single buggy!

I have a 6 month old and 2.5 yo and my pram has broken so I need to buy a new one. I’ve been using a single with a buggy board but my daughter has taken to laying down on the floor in protest wherever we go. She’s not interested in sitting on the buggy board and just wants to have a strop. I’m just worried that I’ll get a double and it’ll only be used for a couple of months. But also can’t really carry on like this as it makes going out alone really difficult.

I'd get a second hand double, even if it's just for a few months. Or if you get a new one, make sure you keep it in a re-sellable condition.

Would definitely buy second hand, so worried about how much faff it’ll be having such a big pram though!

Yeah I'd get a secondhand double, you can resell it when you're done with it. Whatever makes your life easier at that stage!

I got an out n about nipper for my 2 when they were 6 months and 2.5. I used it daily, it was great - particularly for the nursery run. It’s not too wide and lovely to push. Storage isn’t great but it was good for what we needed. We’ve just stopped using it in the last few months as my son is 4 and my daughter would rather walk. We just bring a stroller now if we’re going on a longer journey.

Should have said mine was second hand

Double, double, double

(...and just in case I didn't make point - definitely get a double)

bunglebee · 12/05/2021 08:49

I'd get a secondhand double - maybe one that can also easily be used as a single, like the Phil n Ted's or the Oyster.

Double!!

newstart1234 · 12/05/2021 09:06

I’d go for a double. The older one (ime) may be nearly 4 or even older before they will reliably walk any distance at pace. You get used to pushing the larger size quickly 🙂

J333gr · 12/05/2021 09:15

Ok double it is! Next question then, side by side or tandem?

Lasted longer than my single. Great storage space underneath and fitted nicely into the car boot. Collapses altogether. Not heavy!
stormelf · 12/05/2021 09:26

I'd definitely get a double. I have a 3.5 year old and a 16month old and always have my double with me. We have a Phil and Ted's dot. My oldest walks most of the time but she does get tired and just good into the back seat when needed (she does have an issue with her foot so struggles to walk long distances). The Phil and Ted's dot set up as a double takes up exactly same amount of space as a single pushchair so very easy to use. I bought it refurbished off eBay so was in pretty much brand new condition but for half the price.

OhMyAttic · 12/05/2021 09:30

Double!

Think of the days when it's raining. Or she's ill and you need to go to the doctor. Or you've a bus to catch.

We had a second hand Phil and Teds. Often the older one walked but when he refused it was so practical to be able to stick the baby in the bottom seat and him in. It wasn't much larger than my single buggy and sold on for a good price.

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2021 10:31

I’d go for tandem. But that’s because people park so appallingly where I live that I’m constantly having to step into the road because they haven’t left enough space for me to get past them on the pavement with my pram. It’d be even worse if it was double width!

IhaveMyMoments · 12/05/2021 10:39

I wouldn't.
Dd was 22m when ds born. Didn't bother with a double. Got a buggy board which she despised!
I drive, so no massive need to walk miles. By 2.5 she was just taking her scooter most places. She'd walk without scooter approx 3miles if in a good mood. If not 0.1 mile haha
I can't deal with big bulky stuff, even loaded bags on my prams give me the rage for some reason so this was a bug factor in my choice.

QwertyGirly · 12/05/2021 11:04

It depends what you do. I had a side by side Out n About Nipper because we were going on loads of forest walks, but if you are mostly road/shops/car maybe a tandem.

DappledThings · 12/05/2021 11:05

I had a 22 month gap and used a double for over a year because DC1 was still napping an hour and needed to be able to put them both down to sleep.

Had the side-by-side Mountain Buggy Duet which was great. Only a tiny bit wider than my single. Goes through all doors and on all buses.

RandomMess · 12/05/2021 11:06

Get a double nipper or Phil and Ted in line one 2nd hand.

They are great for carrying clobber too

HazeyJaneII · 12/05/2021 11:06

I second the out n about 360, if you can pick up a second hand one. Really easy to push, easy to fold, Both dcs get a good view of the world.

Oly4 · 12/05/2021 11:06

Yes get a double. Boards are a pain

BogRollBOGOF · 12/05/2021 11:18

I bought a cheap second hand tandem when mine were 2 & 4. Sounds daft but we we were going on a major Scout camp and my usual single/ carrier strategy wasn't going to work that week. 4yo it turned out has hypermobility and ASD, I just knew that he was not a reliable and co-operative walker and 2yo was in Ussain Bolt mode. It was easy for my older one to hop in and out of and my 2yo needed somewhere to nap in the day.

If the 2yo needs it as a shorter term back up, then a tandem with removable lower seat may be more practical for longer term use as a single.
