I am out of ideas, have seen places I like but amenities are closing down. Looking to be up to 2 hours from Central London. A station would be useful.

I need some shops, mostly for food but others too, chemist etc. and a GP, dentist and Post Office within walking distance. Possibly a vet close by. Fresh air, bus service. Access to a town but want local amenities to avoid being in a town.

I don't need schools or playgroups.

There must be places I could look at, but where are they?

What’s the budget.... that’s going to have a huge impact on which direction you go in.

Knew I would forget something. Up to around £800,000 maybe more.

Huge garden is what I am after but really want some peace and quiet. No estates or new build type places. Love Surrey and parts of Kent, Herts, but no idea where to look as randomly looking isn't getting me anywhere, ditto anywhere else as no idea where to look so back where I started every time.

How about places like Godalming, or smaller towns like Petersfield or Haselmere? Or Hook/Hartley Whitney way?

Dilbertian · 12/05/2021 13:13

There are many small towns and large villages around Reading that for your description.

Divebar2021 · 13/05/2021 09:39

Look at Rutland .....my friend lives in Uppingham and it’s lovely. Not far from Peterborough for the train to London ( well under your time limit). I live in Surrey but I don’t know the villages very well but love the look of Abinger Hammer and the area around Leith Hill.

Start by picking the London terminal station which will bring you into London, then work your way out along the possible lines from there.

Decide how far you are prepared to travel to the station and there you have a radius to explore around each station.

Good luck.

If I could live anywhere I would be tempted by Oundle. https://www.loveoundle.org

Where I live-rural East Mids, Rutland/Leics borders and also around Market Harborough

I’m near Oakham - you can get a lot of house here and about 1.5hrs to London. Market Harborough has fast trains. Good road connections too A1/M1

If you don't need schools you could look at Burnham on Crouch/Southminster in Essex

Hayes/ Keston in borough of Bromley.
