Anyone used the what 3 words app?

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 22:46

My sister used it when her car broke down and the breakdown service could t find her. Despite being on a main road.
My dad had an accident yesterday and injured his knee in the middle of nowhere , so used it again, and again It didn't work. Has any one actually used it successfully?!

(It's an app the divides the entire country into small sections with 3 words allocated to each one. So your location in an emergency can be found.)

I don't understand it at all. How do you know what the 3 words are?

Returnoftheowl · 11/05/2021 22:48

Yes, I've used it and never had any problems with it.

You go into the app and either used the "find me" bit to to get the the words for where you are standing, or if you put in an address it will give you the words.

Yes,we have used it for a few lost delivery drivers.
Our postcode is supposedly in one county but my house is over the border into the next one. JTW shows them where it is, accurately n a map.

Ilovemaisie · 11/05/2021 22:53

So if you have the address of where you are why wouldn't you just give that address?

Ilovemaisie · 11/05/2021 22:55

Or why not an app that gives map co ordinates ?
3 random words is so....well.... random.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 11/05/2021 22:55

@Ilovemaisie It’s probably best if you were stranded somewhere completely random like the middle of the highlands where there are no landmarks.

megletthesecond · 11/05/2021 22:56

We've used it to meet on the beach.

What3Words is far more accurate, especially when you're in a rural area like a park. It's also quite helpful for showing where the correct entrance is - some addresses won't quite indicate that correctly.
Parkandride · 11/05/2021 22:59

Used it travelling to rural properties where postcodes are too vague, worked well

If I tell you a string of numbers really quickly, you'll probably forget them.

If I tell you a few familiar sounding words really quickly, they're more likely to stick in your mind.

3 random words really is random, but the concept is genius. Really works.

Lindy2 · 11/05/2021 22:59

I have it on my phone just incase I ever need it in an emergency.

Why didn't it work for your sister and das? Did it not give the right 3 words for their location or did the people looking for them have a problem with it?

It's really precise. The 3 words for my house are different to the street next to my house, for example. So if you were in the countryside and were injured the emergency services could pinpoint your with complete accuracy.

It's a genius idea I think.

Ilovemaisie · 11/05/2021 23:02

Ok it sounds like it does sort of work. I have only seen adverts for it and my thoughts have always been 'eh?'. I think my husband put it on his phone so if he gets lost I suppose I will get to try it out Grin

BillMasheen · 11/05/2021 23:05

It is 3m squares.

I used to work in a sprawling office block. We would give the wtw of our desks to colleagues from other departments when they came to collect documents. It is that accurate. It saved so much faff.

I’ve used it in a crowded pub (remember them?) to guide friends to,the corner we were in.

And last week, used it on the beach.

VanGoghsDog · 11/05/2021 23:06

I think it's a great thing. It's not just the country, it's the whole planet. Yes, every five meter square on the planet has three unique words allocated to it.

Some houses have several sets so you can direct people to the front, side or back, for example - better than an address or postcode.

I made my sister a picture for her birthday of three sets of W3W that represented places that are important to her.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 11/05/2021 23:07

I love what 3 words! Use it all the time as we live rurally. I wish everyone would use it!

JamMakingWannaBe · 11/05/2021 23:11

Love the office W3W idea for lost colleagues - genius!

Purplewithred · 11/05/2021 23:12

Ive used it to guide an ambulance to someone I was helping up a bridle path in the middle of nowhere. And also when doing first aid cover at festivals and the like (those were the days). You just need to check it’s centred properly on where you are before you give the three words to anyone.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 11/05/2021 23:14

Emergency services use it to precisely locate. It's a fantastic thing.

youmakemydreamscometrue · 11/05/2021 23:19

I work for the police and we use it regularly it's always pretty accurate and the officers find what they're looking for, when the people needing help have the app that is. It's especially good for policing rural/costal areas with no real landmarks.

I also live in a difficult to find spot and used it recently for a delivery which turned up bang on time after giving the three words.

wibdib · 11/05/2021 23:20

It’s a fab idea - I’ve mostly used it for ds’s football or rugby matches - they often have matches on playing fields that can have several different pitches with different matches on. Much easier to give 3 words for the assembly point for each team rather than having to tramp over several fields, —especially if you’re running late, as you invariably walk the longest possible route).

stampo · 11/05/2021 23:24

I'd never heard of it until right now. Yet another genius app idea i didn't think up in time. So could my house be 'chicken patio Brazil"? And no other 3m squared on the planet has the same 3 words? Is it only in English?

RhubarbCustardy · 11/05/2021 23:26

I tried to use it to help my friends find the pub we were meeting at. We ended up with Bum, Suitcase and Carrot. We weren't at that pub though so they couldn't find us.

whojamaflip · 11/05/2021 23:30

We use it at work to locate the lads when they are out working in the fields and need parts or equipment bringing out to them - so much easier than directions such as 3 fields down on the right past the postbox then turn left at the big oak tree!!!!
