Childhood dinners that made your heart sink?

A lighthearted post!

Do you remember any childhood meals, that when you asked your mum (or dad) "what's for dinner?", their answer made your heart sink?!

Mine was Lamb's hearts. My Mum cooked these often, presumably it was a culinary delight and was probably cheap, but I hated them (this was back in the late 70s so you ate what was given or went hungry). I don't know what she did with them, but they were as tough as old boots and really chewy. I'm sure offal like that is probably quite delicious in some top-end restaurant but dear Mum didn't cook it like that! I'm in my 50s now and I've only just told her I hated that meal. She was mortified! Grin

We have this with our son now, aged 17. He hates pasta and when we have a family pasta meal, I cook him something different. He's off to Uni next year, so don't know how he's going to manage as I'm told all students live of pasta as it's really cheap...!

What was your least favourite childhood meal...?

Another vote for liver (and onions)
Kidney and onions
Mince (just mince no sauce)

thehorsealreadybolted · 11/05/2021 23:30

Coq au vin

Pork chops, liver, braising steak (aka shoe leather), omelettes which were runny in the middle, cups of milk, blancmange (sp?), spotted dick, boiled potatoes...bleurgh!!

FrankensteinIsTheMonster · 11/05/2021 23:34

Tuna pasta. Weirdly acidic.
Pork chops with barbecue sauce. Dry, chewy and weirdly acidic.
Baked beans on toast, because mum or dad always burnt the toast and pretended they hadn't, as if I wouldn't notice.

MumofSpud · 11/05/2021 23:34

Just remembered 'scotch pies' (maybe from Bejams)

userxx · 11/05/2021 23:36

@Clawdy

Steak and kidney pie. Mum would say "Just leave the pieces of kidney at the side of your plate." But the whole thing tasted of kidney! Shock

It did!! The whole thing was infected with that vile taste.

fightingirish coddle is basically a "full English" if my Mother attempted it.
Sausages boiled, not fried or grilled!
I did try and cook, coddle (think the recipe described it as Whore's Coddle) as a camping breakfast once. I agree, it's pretty horrible😁

Something involving concentrated soup, tagliatelle and tuna. It makes me shudder just thinking about it

YellowLunatic · 11/05/2021 23:37

Kedgeree as a main meal when I was a teenager.
I was not a massive fan of eggs and disliked the taste of smoked fish but could never really figure out why.
In the end I just stopped eating it much to my DM’s displeasure.

Turns out any smoked flavoured food gives me migraines so I did at least have a reason for disliking it.

Neolara · 11/05/2021 23:38

Liver. Kidneys. Tongue. I've been veggie for ,31 years.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 11/05/2021 23:38

Liver and onions.

How were we all scarred for life off of that meal, but our parents enjoyed it? It was retched! And my mother is an amazing cook, but that I just could not eat.

Also scalloped potatoes (potatoes in cream sauce - no cheese) They tasted of soured curdled milk. I hated them so much I would take small bits at a time and hide them in my sock. Then go to the loo and empty them out and flush down the toilet 😂

Also her German Borscht soup (beetroot and cream soup with soured cream on top)

Wincarnis · 11/05/2021 23:39

Monday night’s dinner was always cold roast lamb, boiled potatoes and baked beans. I didn’t much like the roast lamb on Sunday when it was hot, but on Monday with the cold white fatty bits... no..no..no

WrongWayApricot · 11/05/2021 23:41

Mince stew 🤦‍♀️

Ponks · 11/05/2021 23:42

Chicken supreme

Miasicarisatia · 11/05/2021 23:43

It was the school dinners that put fear into me
No wonder we were all thin back then, mind you some of the children seemed happy enough to eat it😮
I'm kind of in awe of people who can happily eat anything👀

plinkplinkfizzer · 11/05/2021 23:49

Got to add , Minced beef , Butter Beans and Boiled potatoes .I wish I had been allowed to say " Fuck that I'll starve ." I never ate it
Watery grey beef stew . My Mother was a terrible cook . I did not leave home with a wad of recipes .

AnnieAreYouOkHun · 11/05/2021 23:50

Liver and onions 🤮

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 11/05/2021 23:50

The adult males in my family were the fussy ones. I happily ate everything put in front of me because it had already been vetted by my grandad and uncles.

HerRoyalNotness · 11/05/2021 23:51

Apricot chicken
Liver and onions
Steak and kidney

🤮

Beamur · 11/05/2021 23:57

My Mum used to cook delicious liver and bacon. Her curry however was the stuff of 70's nightmares. Sultanas....
I used to love baked hearts too but couldn't eat them now. Too visceral.

cinders15 · 11/05/2021 23:58

School cheese pie
Dry as old boots

knightinshiningwhatever · 12/05/2021 00:00

Pork chops and cheese sauce...

Pasta with this god awful fresh pasta sauce from Asda, it had chunks of courgette and tasted incredibly disgusting. It took me about 45 minutes to eat it and it was cold and tasted so gross.

Badabingbadabum · 12/05/2021 00:04

Liver and onions. It was often waiting for us when I came backfrom swimming lessons.

And spaghetti hoops! Can't stand the texture.

thefishthatcouldwish · 12/05/2021 00:06

Cauliflower cheese baked ham and potatoes. Hated this dinner with a passion.

In school spam smiley faces and mixed frozen veg which included broad beans which in My view are the work of the devil.
