Can anyone please recommend any peanut, almond and hazelnut butters that are free from Cashews and Pistacio

Just that really. My dc had an allergy test and has been told they have got an allergy to cashews and Pistacios. No allergies detects for peanuts, walnuts , almonds and Hazel nuts. We've been told to introduce these as butters ideally. Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Tia

Thank you all for replying. I have now joined a few Facebook groups as advised by pp's and I am sure it will be very helpful in future.
@FeistySheep I agree, that's probably a good idea. I was fixated on nut butters as the aller testing consultant recommended introducing nuts to dc in the form of nut butters first. But as that is proving to be quite difficult due to cross-contamination, it makes more sense to just include them either as ground or as a paste mixed into their food x

I’d probably avoid zero waste/refill stores etc mentioned above. Paranoid about cross contamination of products. We bulk buy in shell nuts when seasonal, shell and freeze the nuts to keep the oils fresh. Home made Nutella 😀

Wondering about nut butter - allergist told us cooking certain nuts reduces potency of some epitopes eg hazelnut has more than one commonly recognized epitope, the major one of which is degraded by baking/roasting

@mamakoukla thanks for replying. Good point, I will roast them first (at least initially) before introducing them to her x

Ooh yes good idea to roast/toast first. I can tolerate/enjoy some 'raw' nuts like peanuts and cashews but only walnuts, almonds and others once toasted. I have oral allergy syndrome though rather than a specific nut allergy

mamakoukla · 14/05/2021 12:13

We only found out as DC had high levels of antibody to the major protein epitope in hazelnuts but was tolerating them well.

We were told it could be due to either (a) presence of antibody alone isn’t necessarily indicative of an allergic response, which is why at the clinic it’s blood work, skin prick test and medical history, then a food challenge if deemed safe. A minority of people can have high antibody levels, but no allergic response. (b) by toasting the hazelnuts before using them, I had unwittingly degraded the major protein epitope.

Not all are degraded by heating - just specific subunits.

@HeehawSeeSaw, I was actually thinking as there is no indicated allergy to those nuts, don’t toast or roast them if you are keeping small amounts in the diet for exposure to these.

HeeHawSeeSaw · 14/05/2021 21:30

Thanks for replying. @mamakoukla as I have not tried dd with nuts at all (apart from cashews which she had been found allergic to) I think I will start by introducing a bit of roasted nuts. Hopefully she will not have a reaction to it and if she doesn't then will give her a tiny bit of unroasted nuts . I am so worried about introducing these nuts to her I am thinking of giving them to her whilst close by to a hospital just in case (and waiting close by to a hospital for about an hour or so). We have epipens but what if it takes sometime while for the ambulance to get here. It's all so worrying Sad

@HeeHawSeeSaw you wouldn't be the first parent who's tried a potential allergen in a hospital car park. If it helps ease some of the worry, just do it Flowers

Pics peanut butter - order direct or from amazon

Nutella. Or I make my own with roast hazelnuts. Also the kinder nut bars.

I’ve had emails from those companies to confirm 100% nut free - they have separate factories etc.

Our allergist told us to introduce v gradually. Pinhead rubbed on skin, then half hour later on lips. Then half hour later pinhead size between two chocolate buttons. Double the dose every half hour. Worked very well, obviously with Nutella it’s only 16 nuts whereas peanut butter is 100%

My dc has same allergies - dm me if you want any help.

When I make my own nut butters I buy nuts in shell to avoid cross contamination then roast, then blend in a coffee grinder. Normal blender won’t be strong enough.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 15/05/2021 07:30

Absolutely avoid zero-waste refill type stores. They are a nightmare for cross-contamination if you are avoiding specific tree nuts.

Nut Free Living is another useful FB group. In the most extreme cases I’ve heard of parents buying whole nuts in the shell and washing them before making their own nut butters but unless your child has really serious anaphylaxis I don’t think this is necessary.

Finally the easiest way to keep peanut exposure up is with a product called Bamba. It’s Israeli and currently the focus of significant interest as Israel has very low incidence of peanut allergy. It’s a puffed snack a bit like Wotsits but made from peanuts. Sainsburys sell it.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 15/05/2021 07:31

OP what was the reason for allergy testing if she’s had no reaction to nuts in her diet?

HeeHawSeeSaw · 15/05/2021 14:30

Thank you so much for all the replies. Some really good advice here. @LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 trying pinhead amounts of nuts sounds a good plan. I think I will try that. I think I will also get a coffee grinder at some point when I have established dd is not allergic to these other nuts. They did a skin prick test and told me that she is not allergic to walnuts and peanuts and I think she mentioned hazelnuts too. Can't remember if they tested for almonds, pecan and Brazil nuts and I am hoping they did. I had a toddler who was trying to mess about with their stuff so may have missed what she said and the lady who did the allergy test didn't give me a written record of what was tested. When I asked for a copy of the record she completed after testing she asked me to wait for the letter in the post. She told me dd is only allergic to Cashews and Pistacios and Shellfish and to keep away from them. Said I can introduce other nuts at home. Then they gave me an Allergy Action Plan and Epipens and told me how to use it. I heard them talking amongst themselves that they were behind schedule and it does seem like they rushed through everything.

@PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat I will also get Bamba when I have established for certain that dd is not allergic to peanuts . The clinic confirmed that she is not allergic to peanuts but she hasn't been given any other nuts to eat apart from cashew. Dd reacted to it so was referred for allergy testing.
