Calling all dog walkers/trainers

How did you start? I am interested in starting my own dog walking business with options for training too. I know lots about dogs, I know lots about walking, the issue I have is with the business planning side and the courses. What is the first step I should take? I have wanted to do this for years but have always been too scared to take the leap. Going through the pandemic and having more time on my hands is definitely making me think that I could do this. A friend has taken a massive leap and started her own business (non dog related) and it’s making me think that if she can do it, then it’s possible for me.
So, step one, what courses would you recommend?
Would you recommend volunteering/shadowing an already established Walker?
I would be so so grateful for any advice you could offer me. I’m worried that it’ll fail but I’m more worried that I’ll regret not trying.

I’m a dog walker, been going 5 years now. I saw a gap in the market in my area and took it. I have to be honest though I’m looking to get out ASAP and give up the business. Covid has killed the industry a bit as obviously a lot of people are working from home now and so don’t need a dog walker. There is also so much more competition now than there was 5 years ago when I first started up, so new enquiries aren’t as frequent. Since the start of the pandemic I’m down about £800 PM, which isn’t an insignificant amount.

BUT, if you do go ahead then I definitely recommend shadowing a dog walker for a day or 2 so you can get an insight into the job.

Also recommend going on a canine first aid course and getting a good book on canine body language and studying that, particularly if you’re going to group walk.

I can’t help with the training side of things I’m afraid. Best of luck!

Aw, hang on in there. Once the country starts opening back up and people start returning to work, they’ll need someone to walk all those lock down puppies they bought!
I’ve just started looking at Narpsuk for some Info, I’ll definitely look for a canine first aid course thanks.

It’s not so much that tbh OP, more that I’m just bored to tears with the job now after 5 years. I feel brain dead, it doesn’t stretch me intellectually at all and I honestly thought that wouldn’t bother me and it didn’t for a many years but now it does again. People’s eyes glaze over when you tell them you’re a dog walker too (doesn’t help that my husband is a ‘professional’ wnd they’re always really surprised that he’s with a ‘dog walker’ Hmm I wasn’t a dog walker when we met!

Don’t get me wrong, there are many good points about it and I’ve loved being my own boss for the last 5 years, but I’m also ready to have paid annual leave etc again!

Defo get insurance. I’ve been with both Cliverton and Protectivity and both have been good!

I do have a part time job which I don’t want to leave but I don’t want to go full time either so I want something to fit around that. It’s mainly for a bit of extra income to fund my (motorbike) habit.
I was wondering how holiday leave would work because obviously I want to be consistent. Luckily I have no holidays booked for this year (shocker 😆). It’s a lot to think about and I’ve spent most of the day trying to come up with a name that isn’t too cheesy/sober/long/ overdone.

I'm a dog walker :) I started about a month before the pandemic hit, which wasn't the best timing on my part lol. I'll try and answer some of your questions though!

How did you start?

It was basically a random idea, lol. My old job was destroying my mental health and I was job-hunting online and found a job in the local kennels. I didn't get it, but it inspired me to look into working with animals and it kind of went from there.

What is the first step I should take?

Get yourself qualified in canine first aid (there are plenty of courses available online and in person) and ideally take some classes in canine body language and behaviour. The IMDT are the best place to go for training courses but they're not cheap. Being properly qualified is essential if you want to go down the training route, though.

For walkers, there's no requirement to have any qualifications but insurance is an absolute MUST. I'm with Protectivity, but Clivertons and PBI are other good options you could look at. I pay less than £7 per month and it covers me for walking, sitting, pet taxi and even grooming etc. if I was qualified.

Would you recommend volunteering/shadowing an already established Walker?

It depends, as not all dog walkers work the same way. I wouldn't be afraid to ask, though. It'll get you used to the timings, routine and walking in all weathers too. You'll need to invest in decent waterproofs (jacket and trousers), good quality socks and comfortable, waterproof shoes.

I was wondering how holiday leave would work because obviously I want to be consistent.

I give my clients as much notice as possible (ideally 6-8 weeks) and then just take it. You do lose income but that's part of being self-employed, really. It's not viable to never take a break. I would also say don't fall into the trap of working seven days a week!

Also, it sounds negative, but think about the following:

Can you comfortably take multiple dogs out together safely? Solo walking is hard on the body and it's much harder to make good money that way.
Do you have a vehicle that's safely kitted out with tethers, seatbelts or crates? Make sure you get business insurance too.
Would you know what to do if a fight broke out amongst the dogs?
What about if one of your dogs got injured or slipped their lead and ran?
Are you happy taking care of all breeds and ages or would you be happier specialising in, say, gun dogs or hounds or small dogs?
Could you cope with a reactive dog, or a dog that lunged or pulled on the lead?

Good luck. You could try joining some of the dog walking groups on Facebook for more advice :)

Thank you @cupsofcoffee, how many dogs did you walk? Did you walk them all on leads or some (good recall) off leads?
Also, did you use your own leads/collars because I really hate the extendable leads that some people use. Sorry for all the questions.

My maximum in a group is four, though my insurance does cover me for six. I walk some off-lead, some on-lead - it really depends on the dog, the location, the weather etc. I won't let a dog off-lead until they've walked with me at least 5-10 times though.

I use owners collars but generally I use my own leads. That was initially a COVID restriction but I find it much easier to use my own equipment. There are some dogs who wear head collars or something, though, and I will use their own equipment for that.

Thanks, you’ve been very helpful. I’m kind of excited and kind of scared. It’s a big leap out of my comfort zone (not dogs, if I was just dealing with dogs I’d be fine) it’s all the dealing with people and insurance etc. I have to do it though or I’ll be kicking myself down the line.

I'm glad I could help! And best of luck going forward.

For me, the hardest part is the attachment you make to the dogs. My first ever clients' dog is on the cusp of being PTS soon and believe me, the heartbreak is real :(

It's worth every second but I never knew how difficult I'd find it when they have to go over rainbow bridge.
