Two parents with baby - what's your morning routine?

Just comparing. We have a 10 mo. DH wfh and I'm not back at work fully yet but do a small but of freelance from home on the odd days. Mostly SAHM for now.

How do you organise your mornings between the two of you - showers, getting ready etc versus getting baby ready etc?

Whoever needs to leave/start work first gets in the shower first while the other does breakfast for DS unloads dishwasher has their own breakfast, then the person showered takes over clears away breakfast things and gets DS ready, so the other can get ready themselves.

DH would take DS around 5am until 7 to allow me to get some sleep, then DH would have a shower and get ready for work and go to work. Then I'd shower with DS in the bouncer seat in the bathroom and get us ready for the day.

Once I went back to work, DH would take DS 5-7, get him dressed, I'd get up around 6.45 and have a shower then take DS whilst I dressed and DH showered. We'd all leave about 7.30/45.

Hi,

Dh gets up with baby and does breakfast and milk feed while I have a shower and get dressed. Then depending on how long breakfast has taken either one of us gets dd dressed. I take dd at 8:20 ish basically whether that's getting her dressed or having a play and dh has a quick shower then logs in for work.

When I've had a bad night with dd sometimes I've stayed in bed for dd's breakfast and getting ready but then me having a shower becomes a bit more of a palaver as I put the jumperoo in the bathroom doorway (don't want her in with dh disturbing calls)

When DC1 was a baby the SAH parent had a shower in the evening. Them getting ready in the morning therefore took about ten minutes while WOH parent played with baby for a few minutes. Other than that the SAH parent had the baby from waking up onwards, but rarely had to be anywhere so if baby didn’t get dressed until 9am or the dishwasher was emptied at lunchtime no one cared. WOH parent did a lot in the evenings/overnight.

Interesting. How long does each parent have to shower and get ready?

12 month old here. Dh working from home, I’m also basically on maternity still with odd freelance.

We just do mornings together. Dh aims to start work at 9am. So from when baby is awake until then we take turns. Generally I shower first whilst Dh takes baby and gets baby changed. Then I take baby down and start making a tea and breakfast whilst Dh showers. At a guess we both shower and are ready in about 15 min each. Long leisurely showers or baths are done in evening or weekend with more time. Breakfast we then eat, help baby, clean baby and kitchen together between us so by 9am it’s roughly tidy.

MindyStClaire · 11/05/2021 11:57

When DC1 was that age we were both working fulltime out of the home. I got up early, emptied dishwasher and laid out all the breakfast things and left before DD was up (so I could leave work early to do pickup at 5).

DH got himself up, got DD up and dressed, gave her breakfast and did drop off.

Now DC2 is 10 months and we're both WFH full time. I get up, shower, do the kitchen as above, then get DC2 up and give her a breastfeed.

DH gets up and showers, then wakes DD1. She's awkward atm and won't get dressed for him, so I get her dressed and he goes down and finishes anything I didn't get to in the kitchen.

We all have breakfast together, then DH does drop off while I tidy up.

When my DC were babies I’d get up with them , give them their milk/breakfast, have a cuppa and then have a wash and get dressed with them in a little chair in whatever room I was in.
My DH used to go to work at about 6.30am so would be gone when I got up.

minniemomo · 11/05/2021 12:24

When mine were babies I fed them in bed and left them with exh whilst I showered, or put them in the (very under utilised) cot if he had to leave earlier than they woke then I made breakfast whilst he showered. Only 2 x a week because I wfh, so only when dd1 had her sn programme did I need to get both kids out by 8.15.

He did very little as wasn't a morning person though being a night owl he would do the midnight rocking

eurochick · 11/05/2021 12:33

Our standard morning routing with baby/toddler was 45 mins each to get ready and then swap. So I would get up with our daughter, sort her breakfast, feed pets, empty dishwasher, etc while my husband showers and then he would take over while I get ready.

Kinsters · 11/05/2021 13:09

DD doesn't wake up until after DH has left for work. I normally wake up when she does and we do the morning together - breakfast, teeth, get dressed. At the weekends DH will get up with her and let me have a lie in. We both shower in the evening which makes it easier in the morning.

The evening normally I tidy up from dinner while DH does DD's bath. He then takes her to her room to tidy up/play while I shower etc. Then I swap with him to put her to bed and he can clock off for the evening 😅

MsSquiz · 11/05/2021 13:26

I'm a SAHM and DH works freelance and we have a 16 month old DD. Our routine has been like this since she turned 1.

6:30 - wake up. DH takes DD downstairs and I shower, dry hair, moisturise, feed cats, make bed, open curtains

7:30 - we all have breakfast together

8:00 - DH showers and gets ready while I'm with DD in her playroom

9:30 - I take DD for her morning nap and put on some make up if I'm going somewhere. DH goes to his mum's if doing a morning shift of caring (he takes turns with SIL)

Before she turned 1, we would take turns to get up with her (whoever hadn't been up with her through the night would get up with her. The other would get an extra hour in bed)

Flappityflippers1 · 11/05/2021 13:32

One of us gets up with toddler DS (3.5) and baby (7 weeks) - this is usually 6am. The other sleeps until 7.30 ish. Whoever sleeps in has the first shower. Then once they come down, the other goes up to shower. We have about half hour each to get sorted.

Whoever is downstairs sorts breakfasts, gets DC dressed, then the half hour or so before DH logs in at 9, I get some housework done.

When DH goes back in the office, he will leave at 8.30am.

bloodywhitecat · 11/05/2021 14:00

DP usually gets up first, makes me a coffee, I grab a quick shower then dress before taking Small (12 months old) downstairs for breakfast. DP feeds the pup then goes to work. If it is a chemo day for DP then I make him coffee in bed then one of us takes Small down for breakfast while the other showers, then we will swap.

KingdomScrolls · 12/05/2021 23:45

@September1980 30-45 minutes each depending which day of the week, but we both start between 9/9:30 and live within ten minutes of our main office, if we're traveling anywhere else for work it's on the clock usually. DS wakes up around 7:30 and we tend to leave home around 9am , slightly earlier on nursery days
