No childrens antihistamines in stock anywhere, help?

DD is 6 and badly asthmatic. Shes on inhalers and from March onwards takes antihistamines. She usually ends up on prescription ones.

She’s been prescribed some now but no chemist in a 5 mile radius has the prescribed ones in stock (Fexofenadine for the daytime and chlorphenamine to help at night – I buy them over the counter but she usually ends up on a bigger dose than on the bottle so the dr prescribes then also so school can give them as they won’t give anything not prescribed not even calpol, I’m not here for a debate on whether that’s right or not).

No-one has it, not even over the counter. Apparently there’s been a big rush on for it the last few days and stocks have been taken. I have two chemists who will call me when they get it back in stock but they have no idea when that will be.

Without the antihistamine she will cough so much she vomits, she can’t go to school with a cough right now but even if she could she can’t manage because shes coughing that much. She’s also exhausted because she’s not sleeping due to coughing. She’s missed today of school with me trying to source them.

Any ideas on how to help her between now and then? Various chemists have made suggestions such as washing hair when we come in from outside, drinking water etc.

She doesn’t have covid (tested) and she doesn’t have a temperature so it’s not viral. She’s not struggling to breathe, just worn out by the coughing and sneezing.

So tips to help ease the coughing? And make her more comfortable?

The chemists offered alternatives but she's allergic to ceterizine and I always try the others before asking for a prescription but they don't help her. I do have some though.

Can she take Piriton? The tablets are licensed for age 6 and above. Half a tablet 4 to 6 hourly. If she struggles to swallow it you could crush it up?

Tesco have the paediatric suspension of Piriton in stock at the moment. Our local store had a shelf full. If you have one local it might be an option? Piriton is a brand name for chlorphenamine maleate.

How about getting an online pharmacy to fulfill the prescription?

Dinkydody · 10/05/2021 17:01

There’s next day delivery on Amazon prime 😃

Thank you all, I usually buy piriton for night and had forgotten the supermarkets might have it so I will head there so at least we can both sleep!

Have you tried Express Pharmacy or Superdrug (online)? I've used both in the past when my local chemists have been out of stock of items that I've needed quickly. Solidarity to your dc, I'm the same as are dc4(5) & 5(3) & it can be really miserable!

What about benylin children’s night? It has diphenhydramine which is an antihistamine but is used as an ingredient in cough medicines because it has a sedative effect. It’s also in nytol. But the children’s benylin is safe to use for a six year old.

Rang the local Morrisons and they have piriton so I've sent a family member to get it so we can at least sleep!
