Paid cheques into wrong account

Stupid!

I had some cheques payable to DH that I meant to pay in to the joint account. On checking the balance, I've realised I must have used the paying in slip for my sole account.

It doesn't matter, I can transfer it accross, but are they likely to be rejected and sent back? Where to?

It was NatWest and I paid them in this morning using the automated till. They already show on the account, but I didn't think they could accept them if the payee and account name don't match?

What will they do with them?

Probably not going to be accepted. Phone the branch though and speak to them. I'm assuming you have the same surname and since you have a joint account, maybe they could change the slip to the correct details and pay it in without you having to go down and sort it out.

I was able to pay in a cheque made out to Charlie Park when my name is Charlotte Park (not real name but similar long name and diminutive nickname).

Yes, that's what I'd have done in the olden days, but now it's not possible to speak to a branch. The call centre can't tell me what's likely to happen.

If the cheques are for less than a certain amount, they often don't check the name. If they've already shown up, I'd say they've been accepted already, but that's a guess.

It isn't the branch that will process the cheque, though. Are you concerned about available funds?

MusicMenu · 10/05/2021 15:19

No, I just don't want them to get lost on their way back or, particularly have to go back to pay them in again, if it can be avoided.

This may take a while to resolve. You may find that the funds credit, but them get removed a few days later. You’ll have to sit tight for a couple of weeks

tbh I doubt they will notice.

Are your sole and joint accounts both with natwest? If so, you could ask the call centre to put a note on your account explaining the error and providing details of the account to credit. The reconciliations team may view this and reconcile. However, there is a risk it will end up in a branch ‘suspense’ account and if that is the case you’re best making an appointment at branch if you can.

Sorry I meant to say I doubt they noticed. ..especially if they are now showing on the account

In that case if the deposited cheques are showing on your sole account I would transfer the relevant amount to the joint account if that's where you want the money to go.
